I just got 2 babies this morning. They are 1/2 LaMancha (probably spelled wrong) and 1/2 Nubian. They are 3 weeks old, a doe and a little buck who has been banded. Both have had their CD-T first injection at a week according to the breeder. They should be due again in a week and they were given BoSe. They were also disbudded. The little boy was banded, but I forgot to ask the breeder when.

The little (breeder named her Coconut) girl is a nosy little spitfire, wanting to jump on everything and running and playing like crazy. The little boy (they named him Hercules) is not so much. Most of the afternoon, when we got home Coconut tried to eat EVERYTHING, but Hercules was very quiet, not eating, nibbling here and there, and laying down alot. He looked "fatter" than Coconut, but I didn't think too much about it, but he "Stretches" alot. He takes his rear legs and stretches them out ALOT. This evening he began grinding his teeth. I began to worry about bloat. So I started looking here.
The breeder was feeding powdered milk replacer and that did not thrill me, but whatever, didn't want to change too much as shipping (50 mile trip) I thought would be enough. She was only feeding twice a day, which was the instructions on the replacer. I didn't want to change the feeding times either as once again, I didn't want to make too many changes right away. When I fed them, Coconut sucked down 16 ounces of milk replacer and was looking for more. Hercules took about 7 ounces and was done. I was still worried about him, they both had soft stools when I picked them up, not liquid, but not pellets. After Hercules would not eat, I decided to give him some baking soda. I could not get him to take it from a bottle in milk, so I took about a 1/2 teaspoon and disolved it in enough water to make a paste and put it on the back of his tongue with my finger. He was really not happy!!! Someone said on another thread to massage the left side, which I did, and he seemed to enjoy that. I assume he burped as my daughter heard him "hiccup" one time, but neither have pooped or really burped since I brought them home that I have noticed. He is not standing hunched up and he seemed to quit grinding his teeth after the baking soda. I have put them to bed for the night and they seem to be resting well, but now come my questions....first of all, if he did have bloat, did I do the right thing? I also thought that his behavior might be due to the stress of shipping and being in a new place, but I didn't want to take any chances. Second, to put them on cow's milk, which would make me feel better, do I need to change them slowly? I bought the replacer that she had them on, but I didn't feel good about it then and I still don't. Lastly, could the way he is feeling be an effect of the banding, if so, what should I be looking for to make sure that heals properly and is there anything I need to do to care for the site (It doesn't look like anything has fallen off yet.) If there is anything besides bottles, hay for nibbling, loose minerals, please feel free to let me know. Any help would be oh so much appreciated. As you can tell I am new to goats

Its late, there not many goat folks on, but hoepfully someone with more knowledge than I will be along soon.

I think you did pretty good. There's a lot of new going on, so I'd watch him carefully tomorrow. It really could be just the stress of the move.

If he was just banded before you got him, he could be in some pain and thus the teeth grinding. I don't have a whole lot of experience with that though, so I could be wrong. Three weeks seems pretty early to band...

Last year I banded mine at 11 days. I am going to band DeNephew tomorrow at 15 days. I did notice that mine did rather a lot of stretching after they were banded last year. If he was just banded before you picked him up that might account for that. It also might account for his being otherwise "off". Is there any way you could ask the lady you got them from how long ago he was banded? Also, I don't like milk replacer either. I know you said you might be able to use cows milk. Is there any way you could get your hands on some goat milk?

I would gradually switch them over to vitamin D cow milk...start out 70% replacer, 30% milk, then go 60-40, etc. until they're over on milk. If you hate to 'waste' the replacer, do a 75% milk, 25% replacer mix until it's gone.

I don't band until 2 mos old to prevent urinary calculi. Too late now, but make sure you keep his diet balanced to help prevent it, and get some Ammonium Chloride to keep on hand 'just in case'. There are threads here you can search to learn about U.C. and a proper diet.

I agree his behavior is probably due to being banded...it doesn't feel too good.

Did the breeder speak to you about cocci prevention?

I'll be on later today, if you have questions feel free to PM me. :)

Thanks for the answers. Really appreciate the help and reassurance. I will start changing the milk over to cows milk this morning. Think I will do the 70%-30% Rolls suggested. I don't care if I have to waste the replacer. Better the replacer than risk the babies. I will call the breeder today and ask when he was banded, I should have asked yesterday but didn't think. I checked on the babies and they are chomping at the bit to get out and eat, I hope. Everyone hopped up when I went by their pen. Can I start with the 3 feedings now, or do I need to start moving those times together to give them a chance to get used to that also? I was afraid that moving them to three feedings a say from the two she was using might be a problem. Sorry to ask so many questions, but I want to do this right!

Just make sure you wait at least 6 hrs between feedings to make sure they have time to digest fully.

And maybe make the 'extra' bottle 1/2 what they normally get, then work up from there. I have a 3 wk old kid who's drinking about 18 oz, 3x a day.

i bought a doeling at 3weeks old and they were just feeding 2x a day, but i raised it to 3 20oz a day, seems to do better and x3 on the banding problem, they really need to be older before that is done. hope he gets to feeling better.

Thanks Rolls, don't want to make too many changes too quickly, would rather ask and seem stupid than hurt my babies. Poorboys, I would have thought he was too young to be banded too but it was already done, just have to watch him and make sure he is okay. I am by far no expert but I would rather he had been older. He really ate well this morning. He took 14 ounces but he does not seem to have the ravenous bottle urges his sister has. She would eat forever if I would let her! I let them follow me for a little play time after it warmed up. The are nibbling at grass and she jumps on his back and he cries and then I have to save him. I think he is just a really laid back kid. He is bright, perky and has a waggy tail, he just doesn't bounce off the walls and ceiling like his sister. I am trying to get an order in for DiMeth 40% for cocci prevention, I don't seem to be able to find it. I intend to post some pictures later. I know they were not born at my place, but they are still my babies and I gotta brag a little.
