Loving the herd life
First let me say I'm happy to be here cuz this place rocks
and 2nd my bad if I'm hard to understand, I was to busy being sick to sleep last night and have been taking it easy on the coffee
just in case I'm not over what ever that was. Now to my questions
Okay I had goats when I was in my teens, fed them 16% sweet feed mix with a 14% creep pellet when in milk or bred. They were Nigerians, so they didn't get too much. They had what ever hay the horses got, nomaly some grass mix with briers and weeds in the mix cuz my grandparents hay filed is not the best. Also gave them a horse mineral block, has some cooper in it. And seems like I gave them baking soda.
Now what we {my fiance & I} have are full sized milkers. LaMancha & LaMancha Nubain mixs. Just three for now, one is bred. The others are last springs kids, open. They lady we got them from had them on alfalfa grass mix hay, and I think a 16% horse or creep pellet. She didnt say what mineral, or I forgot.
We have them on %14 calf pellet & sweet feed. Horse mineral block, free choice baking soda. And some slitly rough grass{?} hay that his dad feeds to the cattle. Not the best but not bad eather. They seem to like the dead leaves better. They are just a tiny bit thiner then I'd like, not anything close to having me worried though.
What we can do about the hay is find a filed someone wants cut for free we keep the hay, or they only want a small part. My FIL to be would cut & move it for us, and I doubt he would let us pay him for it. We could get every thing but alfalfa, you have to get that out of state, and it runs $7-$9 a 60-70lb bale. What sort of hay should I be on the look out for. I've had horses all my life and can tell good hay when I see/smell it, but I'm not too good with names
going to change that
I've been thinking about getting alfalfa pellets, and to me the milk is sweeter when they are on sweet feed. What do you think? Would alfalfa pellets make up for the not so grand hay? Should I add BOSS or Flax seed? I like flax seed in my own oat meal, it has omga 3 in it too.
Right now they are dry loted, but will have a few acres to rome in a month or so, then more after that. Just got to goat proof some fence.
What are the min - max of fat, protien, salt, cooper...and so on, that a goat should have? In a small way I feel like I'm over thinking things.
Well I guess thats it, thanks
