I should have named at least one goat Murphy...

Long story short...Cloe died and left me with 2 bottle babies. Jasmine kidded a single buck a week later and has been milked to share with the orphans. I've been mixing with replacer 50/50. It's been going well until tonight when I discovered that Jasmine has some sort of abrasion to her teat. It's bruised and the skin is loose in an upside down "U" in 3 places around her teat. Could this have been caused by her kid?
I tried to milk out some...without causing her pain. Don't know what's more painful, a full udder or a sore teat.

I washed really well with udder wash and dipped teats really well and washed the sore spots with the teat dip.

Should I apply anything else? Keep in mind that her 2 week old kid is with her.

Thanks
Cindy

Canada Eh?
Ouch! Sounds like you are pretty busy with all these babies. I don't know much about goats so I can't really offer any advice, only sympathy ... There are lots of friendly goat people on here that I'm sure will have a great answer for you.

Best of luck!

Thanks :)
I hate to even think it, but if I have to pull her kid and bottle feed him, I will. I work full time plus travel, but my DH is helping with some feedings. He was good enough to take this week off when we were both scheduled day shift. Just to get the 2:00 feeding.

I'm trying to imagine another cause for the injury. She's in a yard with the 3 kids. It has logs and stump and a few stick/stumps from brush they ate in the fall.

Since the skin is loose from the top of the upside down "U" shape, it's not likely caused from a stick or scrape. And the fact that there are 3 of them at the same height makes me suspicious of the kid sucking to aggressively...hmmmm.

I had a ewe with a sore on her teat. I bought some bag balm, and followed the directions on it, and she was fine after a few days. I milker her through it, and although it bothered me that she had a sore on her teat, she seemed fine with it.

I have used bag balm on her when she was chapped. I'll try that again. I'm concerned with preventing it in the future, so intent on finding the cause.
