I read that an Agouti chestnut or chinchilla that is expressing steel will not have Agouti rings, but steel has been the bane of my trying to understand how to identify genetics so.... For instance, I had what I thought was a solid black that I later thought was silvering on the sides, being she was part Silver Fox, but actually she is a darker gold-tipped steel than my others being almost all black with just a touch of color and barely there banding on the very ends of her fur.
Those of you who know the difference, if there is one, I would really appreciate your help in sorting it out so that I can understand it.
The chestnut and the chinchilla are from the same kindle that is 6 weeks old. I took these pictures yesterday. I did not know if the age would be a factor or not, but I included it just in case.

And here is a picture of the fur on a older black gold-tipped steel I have, where I clearly see banding:
Steel drives me crazy!
