Is my boy a dud???

I have a Nubian buck who was born Feb 9, 2015 making him 8 months old. He has ABSOLUTELY no interest in my females at all. He will totally ignore their existence or run from them. I have tried him with young in-experienced does, as well as older experienced, he has no interest in either. He also does not appear to be in rut: quiet, not smelly, and not gross yet. Is there anything I can do to help him like them, is he just possibly too young, or did I buy a dud?

May be to young for him. I guess all goats mature at different rates. My 9 month old buck is a holy terror, but he is a ND and they tend to mature a lot faster. I'd just wait and see but, if he doesn't have any intrest by the time he is a year and half you may have a problem. I raise ND so I can't really speak for Nubians much.

Many times the buck will not smell his first year so you can't go by that. Have you seen your females in heat? My buck has over 30 ladies to choose from and if they aren't in season he pays them no mind, lays around and chews his cud and totally ignores them.

Are they penned together or in adjoining pens? I have a much easier time seeing them ready for breeding when they have to moon at the fence line vs. being in the same field.

He should NOT be too young, 9 months is plenty old enough for breeding.

Sorry for the long delay - crazy week. He has been currently separated but in an adjoining pasture. Until yesterday. Yesterday he was moved into their field bc I did have a doe standing flagging at the fence. He did nothing. We even like - pushed him towards her rear - and he still wasn't interested. Luckily I have an amazing friend who is going to stud me her buck for very little cost.

WOW ...that doesn't sound normal at all. I have two bucks that are about the same age as yours and they will knock themselves out trying to get to the girls. If you had one flagging and he wasn't interested I think I would be talking to the breeder. That is very discouraging. Glad you have a back up plan...yea for friends with goats.

I would give him a little more time. Our boer buck was a little late to get going. He had girls flirting with him and he had no clue. Of course, I had seen him play mount other boys in his pen. He eventually got it. My nigi bucks are raging love machines though.

The deeds have been done - just took our does to cycle twice to catch his interest, now anything that moves has his interest lol
