We get big crates of apples from the fruit farms for the pigs so yesterday I took a fresh crate down to the woods for the guys. While shoveling them in one of my Galloway cows called Unity leaned over and sucked one up. I heard a funny sound like a golf ball dropping in the hole, Unity's ears dropped and she streched her neck right out. Without hesitation I walked her back to the farm into a pen, put on a halter, tied her up and tried to retrieve the apple which is lodged in her esophagus. Now for the stupid bit - because she was bloating up so fast I went into panic mode and pushed my hand and arm in over a peice of wood which was to stop her chomping down on my arm. The wood broke and I had a nasty cut on my little finger. Came to my senses and called the vet which is a 45 min journey, meanwhine massaging her throat which allowed out some gas. All calmed down for 10 mins but then she coughed which must have moved the apple. She bloated up rapidly and I thought we were going to lose her. Worked like crazy to move the apple with massage and by some miracle the gas went down again.
Vet arrives and installs 2 plastic wedges shaped for the jaw, he reaches in with his arm right up to his shoulder and pulls out the apple.
Job done and Unity fully recovers feeding her calf only minutes later
So be warned - cut up apples, potatoes or any roundish solids
