I'm looking to learn as much as I can about goats before I get one. I just started chicken raising and its a blast! So I want to venture more into farming and getting back to basics of living

Welcome. I'm sure Latestarter will be here soon to do a proper welcome. He's the official greeter. And a good one at that.

I started my journey about six years ago (or so, its a little fuzzy when the actual start was). It's been a heck of a ride and took me places I never thought I'd be. It's the most rewarding and heartbreaking thing I've ever done. I wouldn't change it for the world. We're still building our farm and learning.

I researched goats for years and then ended up with sheep. LOL Things happen. My goats are still on the agenda. I'm more careful now and understand that biosecurity takes front stage. All the time, every second of every day. Allowing even one sick or unknown animal onto your property can cause death, and contamination for years to come. Demand paperwork to prove testing and negative results on every animal. Quarantine them, watch them, and change your gloves and boots after caring for them (clothes too but I didn't want to sound like I'm paranoid).

Learn about acquiring clean animals and what tests should be done to ensure they are clean.

Thank you so much for sharing. You definitely mentioned things that I would have never even considered, yet it makes sense that before you get anything, make sure it's healthy, but for far greater reasons than I thought.

LOL @Ponker Thanks! Greetings @Fish sticks from the front range in Colorado. :frow Welcome to BYH! Seein' as where you're located, you'll be more worried about the heat than some of us... As Ponker said, you'll want to really be considerate of biosecurity But don't let all the worries worry you too much. It's all about learning as you go, and there is a wealth of info and experiences shared in the various threads here. You'll also find a really great group of folks always willing to lend a hand or help you out when you come up against something you need help with. A lot of us (like you) are over on BYC as well. If you haven't yet, you might also check out the other sister sites Links there --->

Anyway, so's you know, we're all addicted to pics of other's animals, so as you come by some, if you'd be willing to share, we'll all OOOooo and AAAaahhhhhh over them ;) Glad you joined us! Looking forward to following your journey!.

Welcome from Indiana!
I do not have goats, ...but am considering.
Research is good to know what you will need to set up and be able to expect. A few of the many on this site have offered me great suggestions if and when I get started that I would never have considered.
With rabbits (I realize they are in a class by themselves compared to goats) I have Plan B and maybe Plan C in place if Plan A doesn't work. Be able to work through the mistakes and aggravations. Run with the punches and ask for help and advice from folks here. If you are on the BYC site, you already know that! It is also good to find folks close to you that also raise goats.
Welcome to the community. It is a good place.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! BYC has been awesome and I can definitely see I'll have a great time here too! I'm embarrassed to admit but I used to be addicted to Facebook, since I don't work that adds up to hours and hours a day, but between BYC and BYH I spend most my time here now. And to me it's not time wasted because I'm learning so much, and I'm able to share what I'm learning with my family.

Oh, LOL I used to be on BYC and I miss it.
I'd agree the knowledge here is often very valuable.

I started out with 6 chickens in the city until we put them out morning a little to early and a evil little raccoon had to make him self lunch. He only ate 1 and killed 4. After that we moved to 2 1/2 acres. I did a lot of research on chickens and we got 8, Then my chicken math started. We went from 8-74, That is when chickens get annoying. Then we got 3 ducks. I love ducks. Then we got cats. But we had always wanted a dog so there our search went. We went to pounds shelters we searched CL and nothing. So out of no where our friends called and asked if we wanted there 5 month old Pit-bull Blue Heeler Lab mix, We said yes. So then Boaz joined our farm. I still wanted a bigger animal than chickens, ducks cats and a dog. We went and got our to first goats Naomi and Hawk. Then we got 2 hair sheep. Then Tasty came and joined our farm. Our farm name is Tasty Acres Homestead. He is the mascot of the farm. He is the goat that will never be tasted. Next we got 12 rabbits that didn't go very well. We Then traded our sheep for a purebred supposedly registered Oberhasli billy. He was not registered. His name is Leader. But my goat math just keeps getting bigger. Then we got Stella and Sophie as a pair. We just welcomed a mom and her baby to the herd. They are purebred Alpines, We have to sell the baby tho. We butchered Hawk. We plan on adding a few LGD to our farm when we move.
