I bought a couple of 9wk old Nigerian Dwarf goats about a month ago. Everything i read said that goats a quieter then dogs so why are these two so loud? They whine for hours in the late afternoon. They have food, they have water, they have play structures so why are they so loud.:barnie
HELP...any suggestions? if I can't get them to stop i'll have to get rid of them.

Thank you.

More than likely they are in heat. How long have they been doing this and they are now about 13 weeks, correct?

It's not likely that they're in heat at 13 wks, and does are only in heat for 24 hrs, so they wouldn't be crying daily if that was the case.

It's attention they want. If they want to see you, they yell. If they see you outside, they'll yell even louder. If you go to them, you're showing them that yelling works....so they keep doing it.

Mine yell when they see me. I completely ignore them and work in the garden. After a while they get bored and go find something else to do.

If you're only feeding them 1x a day, you might try feeding them morning and afternoon. Doesn't have to be a ton, maybe just some hay...."new" food is more exciting than the "old" food that's been there since morning.

I've read Nigerians can be as vocal as Nubians. If you want quiet goats, get Oberhasli.

Acually Nigerains can and do go into heat at very young ages. They are not like the bigger slower maturing milk or meat goats. So yes they can be in heat at 13 weeks. And no, the go into heat for 24-72 hours. That is why I asked how long they have been doing this.

Possible? Yes....Likely? No.

I still say they want attention. My kids holler every afternoon too. And many of my does don't make a sound when in heat, they just act......wierd.

As Rolls said, I agree it is an attention thing. When I go outside for anything and I am within eye shot of my goats, two of my goats immediately start vocalizing when they see me.
I ignore them as I don't want to encourage or reinforce negative behavior. Within a minute or two they go about their business even if I remain outdoors.

If you knew how my goats are fed you would definitely know this isn't a hunger thing!

Give your goat time. They will adjust.

When my Nigerians go into heat the cream bloody murder for 3 days. They don't shut up. My larger goats (Kikos) don't make a noise when they go into heat. So Nigerians do go into heat at very young ages, including 13 weeks, and most Nigerians scream like crazy when in heat. This may not be the reason they are screaming but it is very possible. If they are still doing this and it has been longer then 3 day then it was not heat.

My Nigerians get loud anytime they see a human being, I think it's probably a wanting attention thing. Also some goats are just loud and some are more laid back, one of my four is just loud lots of the time for no known reason. My others are all quiet as long as they have hay and they don't see people ;)
