A lot of goat people in this area feed Right Choice Emerald medicated mineral (which is a cattle mineral) to their goats.
My question is, why would someone want to feed a medicated mineral? Wouldn't a low dose of antibiotics all the time build resistant bacteria?
I appreciate any and all input.

Thanks,
SC

copy of a tag for
Right Now Emerald

When forage turns green, turn to Right Now Emerald!

Guaranteed Analysis

Calcium (min) --- 16.5%
Calcium (max) --- 18.5%
Phosphorus --- 7.0%
Magnesium --- 1.5%
Salt (min) --- 14.5%
Salt (max) --- 16.5%
Copper --- 1500 ppm
Zinc --- 4500ppm
Manganese --- 4000ppm
Cobalt --- 20 ppm
Iodine --- 200 ppm
Selenium --- 26 ppm
Vitamin A --- 100,000 IU/lb
Vitamin D --- 10, 000 IU/lb
Vitamin E --- 100 IU/lb
I don't see any medication on this copy of the tag and if it was medicated it would have to be stated in the ingredients list, by law. This information comes from an extension agency, Purdue, that indexes bagged feed and mineral tags.

They make a medicated and a non medicated mineral.
The medicated contains either 2800 g/T or 4800 g/T of Aureomycin

The info I have on it is:

Calcium---- 15-18%
Phosphorus---- 6%
Salt--------------20-22%
Sodium---------7.2-8.5%
Magnesium---------2.5%
Potassium----------1.0%
Copper PPM--------2500
Iodine PPM----------200
Selenium PPM--------26
Zinc PPM------------600
Vitamin A IU/LB-----300,000
Vitamin D IU/LB-----30,000
Vitamin E IU/LN-----300

This came off the flyer I picked up at the feed store today. I have not check the website out at www.RightNowMineral.com

They make 4 different minerals depending on the season on what you feed your cattle. The goat folks just feed the Emerald.

aureomycin given to cattle is used to control/prevent BRD, bovine respiratory disease. I am not a cattle person but recall that medicated feed crumbles or topdress is given to susceptible animals or animals at risk. I guess free choice mineral could be an option too. Not so good for goats...JMO...maybe a cattle person could help you better....the emerald non-medicated formula would seem to be a Better Than Nothing option for a free choice mineral.
