We just purchased 2 Alpine doelings this past weekend from a local farmer. The delings are currently feeding from their mother. They will be 1 month old when we pick them up. Am I safe using milk replacer or should we go with whole cows milk. We will have no access to goats milk.

I have also reserved a Toggenburg doeling that has yet to be born. We will be picking up that baby at two weeks old. With no access to goats milk, is cows milk the next best thing?

Thanks

The milk replacer that we are currently using is

1 gallon of store bought whole milk
Remove 2 1/2 cups
Add 1 cup of buttermilk and 1 12oz can of evaporated milk.

We have been feeding this for 3 weeks now and have had no scours and they have been growing great!!

We did have a case of constipation BUT I ran out of buttermilk and feed them straight milk so who knows what caused it. :idunno

The fact that you say you ran out of buttermilk is cause for me to file this information in the "great things to remember" file. Thanks!

That's the exact recipe we've used before, and it worked really well for us.. Came highly recommended to me from a very experienced boer breeder who tried lots of different things over the years.. Dunno where he came across it, but I like it a lot.

We actually switched a couple of kids off real goats' milk onto this stuff when our frozen goats' milk supply ran out.. We made the transition slowly, of course, but the kids never skipped a beat.

I give it :thumbsup :thumbsup
