I noticed a marked increase in the amount of loose mineral supplement consumed as soon as the cold weather hit. This would have also coincided with the time when fresh browse became unavailable. I'm just curious why this is and I'm quite sure someone has a good answer here!

My goats actually were eating minerals like crazy in the fall and now with this colder weather have backed off. So I can't answer your question at all. I guess they know when they need something.

I know what you mean. Mine have started eating mineral like crazy. Just started last week. I wonder why?

Mine just started gobbling minerals as well. Mine are on hay year round, we have no pasture. I figured it was because they just hit the three-month mark in their pregnancy and need extra to grow those babies. I only noticed the bred does increasing their intake, the buck and open doelings are eating about the usual.

Usually better than I do!
:lau Absolutely, I agree!!!

Mine did the same..fall gorge??? All is good with them??? So who am I to question those crazy goaties!! :gig

I have been told by several long time goat farmers that goats do have some internal mechanism that leads them to take what they need.. that is why minerals recommended to be loose kind and offered free choice.. mine too go through spells where I am topping off daily and other times where it seems not being touched.. I also have certain animals that I observe consuming more than others.. individuals I guess..
