We just brought home our first goats, a Nigerian Dwarf mother and daughter. The kid is 5 months old, and the seller told me she couldn't have baking soda or minerals until she's 8 months. Why would this be? I have just the one pen for them, and giving minerals and baking soda "free choice" isn't going to work if one of them can't have it.

I have no idea why the breeder would have told you that. :/

But, I would remove the baking soda...it doesn't work as a preventative. Keep it on hand for treatment needs.

Leave the minerals free choice and give your doeling access to them.

Mine get minerals right away, They are out for the moms and when ever the kids want them they can get to them. I often see even 3 or 4 week old kids munching on the minerals. We only use loose goat minerals.

We don't put out baking soda. we keep it on hand as well as a quart or two of mineral oil for emergencies. And a good working 30cc drenching syringe available at feed stores.
