Hi! Does Greek/Egyptian mythology interest anyone here? It's a nerdy passion of mine, and I rarely meet anyone else interested in it.

I love the myths and symbols of all cultures my favorites are Greek and Native American and Celtic symbology.

I'm actually learning about Celtic mythology now. It is absolutely incredible to see how cultures worked thousands of years in the past!

The most amazing thing to me is how cultures that did not enteract have such similar storys and symbols. One example is the flood story, it is found in Native American mythology and in the Bible. And that is just one of many examples. Look at the symbols for spring the animals may be different but it is frequently a baby animal of some sort, look at the P.O.W. on here for the last little while. Many people submited pictures of babies to represent spring.

I need to find time to read up on my Celtic myths. Just hard to find time these days.

I believe I know what you mean - Roman mythology is based off of the Greeks, and the Greeks base it off of the Egyptians. If you look hard enough, there's always a connection..

I'm a HUGE mythology fan: Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Celtic/Arthurian, Japanese/Shinto, Hindu, Middle Eastern, Aztec/Nahua, pretty much anything.

DBF has got me hooked on the Stargate SG-1 tv series which draws heavily on all mythologies. You get to see Ra, Hathor, Anubis, Apophis, Camulos, Bastet, Chronos, Thor, Freyr, Loki, Arthur, Merlin, and many more over the course of the series. DBF usually sighs and pauses the DVD whenever I start going on about this deity or that and what certain myths are.

I've read a lot of Joseph Campbell: Masks of God and Hero With A Thousand Faces and some others of his. Campbell does a lot of analysis of myth and compares the themes common to all myths, even including Star Wars. George Lucas drew heavily on mythology when creating Star Wars.

I keep wanting to name my goats Norse names, but keep getting voted down by the family. "MOM! We're not naming the goat Skadi!" or "What's a Heidrun?" or "If you want to name her Tre-gyul the Old Norse word for amber, why not just call her Amber?"

At least I was able to name my daughter Fianna.

And I did have dogs named Freyja and Stormr. Luckily, the Norse word for storm is the same as English.

YES! I'm not the only one! I am laughing hysterically right now. My family is a huge fan of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate atlantis. Whenever we watch a movie on this or that mythology, I find myself correcting them on their mythical facts. ( FYI: never watch the Clash of the Titans ) Right now though, I know Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Norse and a smattering of Celtic. I'd like to learn more, but it's rather hard finding reliable sources. It's not like you can look this stuff up on Wikipedia...( I wish ) Did you ever notice times when Daniel got his facts wrong? I keep remembering when he said that Athena was a war goddess. Still annoyed at him for it.

No its not something I study but I had the privilege of working in deepest darkest downtown Cairo and all over Cairo back in the 1990s
Coming from the UK we are spoiled in rich history at home but working right by the Pyramids and Sphinx and spending my days off exploring or spending hours in the museum and riding a horse in the Sahara dessert on a full moon still is one of my fav experiences in life as you really do feel the history of the whole place so nothing nerdy about it. Nerdy

I'm jealous.... You work right by the Pyramids? Have you ever been able to explore them more? What are they like? That is incredible!
