I found some Heifers for sale locally, the seller isn't sure what the exact breed is on them but they said possibly some pure Corriente & Longhorn... or mix of the two. Also said they are all approximately 2yrs old.

Any input on the breeds as far as Meat & Temperments go?
How easy are they to care for in comparison to BFW or Herefords?
I have heard that some can tell the age by the horns? any guesses?

We sold off our beef herd and need a couple girls to help keep the pastures down a little while things regrow. they look very pretty :) but I am not familiar with either breed, we have always had BWF with the exception of an Angus/Brahma mix heifer.

That is what we had in our pasture. They actually got real friendly, the heifer we called Carmella and she would actually be interested enough in you to lick you, just a touch with her tongue. They were real easy keepers in our pasture, we have really good fence because we live next to the highway and really didn't want them getting out! We had no health problems of any kind. I really liked them, but they will not get big no matter what you feed them so don't bother. They will fill out good but don't try to make them a beef cow, won't happen. But I hear they are not bad eating, extra lean, with more health benefits than regular beef, so they say..... We will get ours back from the butcher sometime the end of the month.

They'll pretty-much just be pasture ornaments that will help keep the grass down a little. I do want nice cows though! I did read that their beef was tender & lean, equal to angus but with half the fat.

We are keeping a little BWF Bull calf from this year, but havent decided on if we want to turn him into a steer or not yet. any input on if the cross would be better for beef?

I would like a small, pretty, friendly & well built cow that fills out well on the pasture with little "maintainence" in the winter... more charachteristics of the Corriente but with some added beefiness from the BWF..... i can dream, lol.

a cross with a good beef breed sure wouldn't hurt! I really wanted to keep Carmella, just because she was always curious and seemed to like people. I had her eating treats from my hand, stupid I know, but hey I like animals. If we had water to the pasture in the winter we would have kept her and crossed her with something good to eat....

I have 4 registered corriente cows and the cattle you pictured look more longhorn to me. Corriente have a very triangular head as viewed from the front and their horns tend to go out to the end of their ears and then turn up.
A smaller cow in both body weight and bone they are thrifty and will eat stuff that other cows won't. My girls are currently bred to a Corriente bull but in the future I will be breeding them to a meat breed bull. Local guys are breeding either longhorn or corriente to beef breed bulls and not getting docked at the sale barn.

You can learn more about Corriente by going to the north american corriente assoc website.

The man across the road has nice herd of long horns. He is running 3 Charolais Bulls with them and the calves look great. I would say 90% of them come out looking like the Charolais. I think the BWF bull would really beef them up. I should also mention that the Bulls are all polled and most of the calves are polled.
