I bought the Oster Shearmaster variable speed clippers... After I sheared my llamas and alpacas this summer....- Fun fun fun, I found there is an art to doing it and I haven't discovered it yet.

I found the handle etc..still would get hot even with lubrication of blades and oiling ever animal or more.... and hair got stuck easily, then blades seemed to dull on just one animal....

My questions:

What blades would be best to use with this machine on both llamas & alpacas...?
What do you to oil etc.. yours? ( my friend has someone come out that shears and they use bar & chain oil )
It is sandy here, so I guess it dulls quicker... any tips you can give me....... ?

What else do I need to know.... hehe :p

Are your shearing clippers like this? http://lightlivestockequipment.com/shearers.php

You need the clippers that have separate blade and comb. Also want to buy something that will take the camelid comb. http://www.premier1supplies.com/detail.php?prod_id=18104&cat_id=37

Here is a video that you can buy. Matt Best is a very good shearer. http://lightlivestockequipment.com/combs&cutters.php

I use WD40 (bought in the gallon can) to oil my blades or you can use No. 10 white clipping oil. I use the white clipping oil if I'm shearing a cria since it doesn't leave a smell. I also use Andis Cool Care Blade Cleaner in between animals. http://www.amazon.com/Andis-Cool-Clipper-Blade-Cleaner/dp/B000S0AVWE

If your llamas/alpacas are dirty, you will go through a lot more blades. You should have enough blades so that you can use one per animal with a couple extra just in case. You can have them sharpened instead of buying new every time. They do get hot no matter what but when you get good enough, you will get them done sooner than the blades get too hot.
