So I had someone stop today looking for live rabbits for meat. I told him all I had available right now was some younger netherland dwarfs (I raise them just for fun/pets) and that he'd have to check back later. He expressed some interest in buying some of the dwarfs for meat (at a reduced price due to their size). I told him I had never heard of anyone eating dwarf rabbits, but I suppose you technically could eat them...for what its worth you could eat any animal barring its not full of toxins I guess. Anyway he went on his way rabbit less with plans to stop in the future. But it did get me wondering, Has anyone on here every butchered and eaten a Netherland dwarf rabbit, maybe someone who breeds them has eaten one that didn't measure up? A pet quality dwarf isn't that much smaller then a cottontail and people hunt and eat those. I have no plans to start breeding and eating my dwarf rabbits but the guy did get me wondering if anyone else does. I'm not looking for any recipes folks I just have a curious mind.

Years ago, I knew a very successful Dwarf breeder that ate his culls. As we all know, they aren't very big as rabbits go, but they are considered "commercial" in type, meaning that they are supposed to have a rather massive body per their general size, a lot of muscle relative to their bones. You'd probably have to wait until they were full grown or nearly so to make it worth your while, but rabbit meat is rabbit meat. :hu

Im guessing that would be a similar comparison to a Cornish game hen in the serves-one category. Looking at our N.D.s, I just dont see the muscle development that our Californians have. Im curious if you have an update?
