Hello all, I'm new around here and I'm new to owning goats.
I've taken care of friend's goats, and worked at a farm that had goats. I don't recall them ever being noisy.

I got two goats for our weedy 3+ acre home that is turning into a hobby farm--we've had them for a whole 4 days! One is a 5-year old Saanen and the other is a 2-month old BoerXSpanish--both Wethers. The baby was weened early by his breeder and so they arrived a month earlier than I expected. With the short notice I haven't yet had a chance to put up a couple gates so they are confined to their pen (12x10 outside area and 12x10 shed). I tether the older guy out for several hours a day (when it's not too hot and sunny or raining) and give the baby something yummy to eat to distract him from being alone. The Saanan is terrible--he cries any time he sees me if he's in the pen and when he's tied out and can't see me. I'm always spying on him when he's tied out so he doesn't get in trouble--but his previous owner said he was tied out all the time and he's very obviously tether-smart.

Besides giving them more time to adjust to the move, and getting the gates up so the big guy has the run of the place--what can I do to get them to quiet down? We live on the edge of a tiny town and I don't want to drive the neighbors nuts.

They should settle into a routine.

Be careful about letting them train you right now though. If you run out to "shush" them everytime they holler.........they will NEVER shut up, lol

I don't think the big one should be out tethered alone. Put him with his friends and he should be happier. If they're still unhappy you could give them some toys. How about an old tire, a cable spool etc.

We only have the two goats. I really don't want to tether the baby, so I make sure they are within sight of each other.

What age is safe to start training the baby to be tethered? Even if I get the gates up, he is small enough to get through the fencing until he grows a bit more. I've put him on a leash, but he's pretty skittish so that was a short exercise.

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying hard not to let them train me. I finally got a couple cattle panels made into a little portable pen so the baby can graze near the the old guy--both seem much happier. I googled "new goats won't stop crying" and saw plenty of references that it's normal, but I still felt so bad that they were so unhappy!
