Hello everyone! My husband and I are proud new parents of a bouncing "literally" 2 week old Nigerian Dwarf!
His name is Dex! We also have 2 chickens, Pip and Squeak :)
It's been several years since we raised our human babies... I have since forgotten how hard it can be at times, especially when they can't tell you how they are feeling :-/ I'm so glad I found this site with so many people willing to share their knowledge!

Greetings @Dextersmom from the front range in Colorado :frow Glad you joined us here, welcome to BYH! Just so's ya know, goats really should have a goat companion... they are herd animals. Then you could have a "Hop" and "Scotch" to go with Pip & Squeak :hide;) oh wait... you already named him Dex... so maybe "Trose" for the companion? :smack OK... sorry, poor attempt at humor. Anyway, we all love pics if you have some to spare. Thanks in advance. Lots of goat (and chicken) folks here and I'm sure more will be along to welcome you. Make yourself at home and jump in when you're ready! :caf

Congratulations on your new boy! :celebrate
I assume you are bottle feeding him. :)
You will want to look around and find him a companion... there is a member @babsbag who is also in No CA... she is in a kidding avalanche right now... maybe she will have a companion.

I also assume you will have him wethered (castrated).... you will want to ;)

Thank you all for the congratulations! We're thrilled to have him! I'm working on a companion, but I think we'll get a bottle baby that's already weaned. Dex is still inside with us. I worry so much about his health... maybe I'm reading too much online I do have a lot of questions as you can imagine ! I don't have time right now, but later today!

Getting the hang of the "thread" thing... I hope you saw my earlier post in response to the "Hello"'s! Thank you for the warm welcome!
Where can I post pictures?
Also... is there a good thread regarding poisonous plants? We have a few plants on the property that I've read are toxic to goats... Does that mean one flower or leaf can kill, or is it in large quantities? ?
We have a grafted cherry tree in the yard (not wild cherry). It doesn't get fruit, but it does flower and drops it's leaves.

Thank you for the warm welcome! We're considering another, just a bit older than Dex. I am bottle feeding him, and have some questions... is there a good bottle feeding thread you know of that I might take a look at? He's getting castrated in a couple weeks... I heard the boys can be pretty smelly otherwise!

Yes, saw your response. :D I don't know if you're on a phone, tablet or desktop... But right above where you type, there's a "tool bar" to select for example Bold or Italic or Underline etc. A little further over, just past the smiley face (where you click to open a LOWER smiley :celebrate tool bar) there's what looks like a picture (mouse over it will say "image")... click that to add a picture. Next looks like 2 strips of film, you'd click that to add media (video). You can add more than one pic per post but I think the limit is 10, and I believe you have to have posted 10-15 times before you're allowed to post pictures.

If you go up top (on left) and click on Forums, then scroll down to the goat area, there are 7 tabs to choose from all about various subjects dealing with goats. There's a wealth of info in there about care and feeding as well as all sorts of other useful info and experiences. You don't need to buy the book "raising goats for dummies"... you'll get all that and more here for free, and the biggest plus... If you ever get into a situation when you really need help, like NOW, there's normally someone on here that can get your questions answered relatively quickly. Can't get THAT with a book ;) Well, unless you know the author personally I guess...

As for poisonous plants, Here's one list: http://poisonousplants.ansci.cornell.edu/goatlist.html

Welcome to BYH. Goats are addictive and no one can own just one so be warned and be very careful. I started with 3 seven years ago and now have 40. :)

I live in Anderson, near Redding. What part of No. CA are you in?
40!! Oh My! We don't have room for 40. Two would be our limit .. at least for now! We're in Humboldt County.
