Hello everyone! My name is Josh, I’m 37 and relatively new to farming - my wife and I started with a dozen ducks and now with my mother and father in law, we have quite the start to an amazing farm! 50+ chickens, 11 ducks, 4 pheasant, 2 geese, 1 turkey. In the spring-fall we generally get 100 meat chickens every other week- atm we’re the sole supplier to one local restaurant with plans to expand that this year in combination with our p2p sales. We also have been raising 3 to 5 pigs/year for the past few years now- this year we plan on doing 12. We also have raised turkeys for 2 seasons now- first season we raised 12, this past season we raised 31. This year we’ll likely increase our number of turkeys we do along with the addition of cows to the farm.
I’ve used backyard chickens for a few years now, first discovered that site in 2016, I believe. I just found this site today while doing a little research on the best practices for raising cows.
I have some beginner questions about raising cows for beef. I’m still confused with even after doing some research. There’s a lot of varying opinions out there, which is what brings me here, to interact with people that have experience/do it day to day.
So I’m aware this is the introduction forum, but if someone could direct me to where the newbies go to ask questions, I’d truly appreciate it!
Real quick, I’ll touch on the farm, land, location, seasons- the farm is in Cheboygan, Michigan - roughly 15 minutes from the mackinac bridge (Upper Peninsula-Michigan). The land is still being worked on to suit our needs, but at the moment there’s heavily wooded areas along with a large field (5 to 10 acres if forced to guess). The barn yard is 180’x180’ right now with an addition being added to support the meat chicken operation (possibly double the current barn yard). As far as seasons go... it’s Michigan, we have 4 seasons and some times throughout the year we can experience 3 of the 4 seasons in one day! Winters are harsh - lots of snow and can see subzero temps. Summers are hot and humid. Spring is sometimes confused early on with winter and fall can go either way, super hot or bone chilling cold and wet. Total land is 40 acres. Two wells, one pond (we made for the ducks and geese). Power is easily accessible right now nearly any where close to the barn yard.
