I milked a goat for the first time today. she is a Boer goat (I know, a meat goat), and she gave birth yesterday, on Easter. Her milk looks like it has tiny red mite-ant looking bugs in it. anyone know what this is and does anyone have any pointers for me?

Are the spots moving? Are you seeing it immediately in the milk after you milk into a clean pail? Sounds very strange..

It's either lice / mites coming off her body when you milk her or it's blood spots (or possible mastitis) in the milk....blood in the milk is fairly common for the first few milkings.

Just askin'...but are you milking for your own use? Just-fresh doe's milk usually isn't very good for anything but bottle feeding, until they're done making colostrum. I never save the milk for us before 3-5 days after freshening, and some wait even longer.

Thanks to ya'll I figured it out. I see that I dont need to drink the milk yet. I figure I will wait about a week and then it should be fine to drink. It was little bugs coming off of her skin when I was milking her. I need to wash her teets and udder before I milk her, and I am going to treat her for lice and mites. Thanks again, ya'll.
