I recently bought some pygmy goats from a sale. Some are pregnant, others, I'm not sure. Obviously, I don't know if any have had shots, wormed, etc.
Should I worm & give shots to them? Even the pregnant ones? Thanks for any help.

I am sure others will chime in as I am new to goats too.
I had a pregnant doe too starting out. Here is what the vet told me to do on her over the phone. Bring her a fecal sample(it checked fine) and also I should check her lower eye lid on the inside for pink. The darker pink the better. If it is light or white she is in danger(anemic) from worm overload. I have ivemetic plus on hand that is fine for pregnant does but I have not had to use it yet. I started her on Molly's herbal wormer(#2 formula) while she was pregnant and have continued with that since I am now milking her I didnt want alot of chemicals. I also vaccinated with CDT(best to give the prego this 4 weeks before kidding to carry on to the babies)I did but it was by accident because I did not know how far along she was. That is all I did. SHe had two healthy beautiful buckling too.

They are new goats so I'm gonna say do a quarantine deworming drench (no fecal sample needed prior). Do NOT use Valbazen.

Assume that they have not had CD&T shots and go ahead and give them one with a booster shot in 3-4 weeks.

*Quarantine Drench to help avoid introducing drug resistant worms
--isolate animals to barn, dry lot or a sacrifice pasture not used for other sheep
--use more than one dewormer class, one of which should be cydectin and the other
probably levamisole (Prohibit)

--manure sample worm egg counts should be negative prior to turnout with other animals
do sample 2-3 weeks after deworming
--release from quarantine onto YOUR INFECTED pastures
you want the animal to pick up your non selected worms

Is Ivemectrin plus ok to use though? The vet told me it was but I have not used any yet since they are fine. I have been using the herbals though and I hope that works because I like that idea better than the chemicals. I didnt quarentine mine since I didnt have any goats to start out with. Mine came as a pair too. My first two goats were given to me. However, I did get two more and didnt quarentine them since the other area I could use is a nursery. I have so much to learn and do still.

Ivermectin plus is fine. You still want to do a quarantine drench using 2 different dewormers to remove any resistant worms so that you do not have them on your property.

What wormers would you suggest that is best for a quarantine drench? Since I have the Ivemectrin Plus which other? Safeguard?

Safeguard is all but worthless for everything except tape worms.

Try to use Prohibit if you can as your second quarantine dewormer.
