Hello all-
I have a 6 year old Nigerian Dwarf doe with chronic mastitis. The vet says it's most likely due to cystic ovaries. He's been out three times for her, and the mastitis just comes right back, within weeks of getting better, she's all swollen up again, and it's a $150 bill every trip.

The vet's advice last trip was to have her put down. He says her condition will just continue to worsen and she'll go down on us and just not get back up.

She's out and about in pasture, but is really moving slow these days. She's the sweetest thing to us, but she's gotten terrible with my other two does. She doesn't bother our wether much, but she gets these spells where she just bullies the other girls, mostly using buck-like behavior.

They eat an 18% dairy mix, hay, alfalfa pellets, and they snatch chicken feed whenever they can. They have 5 acres of pasture.

Does anyone have any experience with cystic ovaries? Any successful treatments that worked for you? Any advice is welcome. She's all swollen up again on the right side and my husband is leaning towards having her put down.

Thanks-
Em

I would dry her up fast, if you want to keep her. Take the dairy grain away from her and just give her hay. Massage her udder and use hot compresses for the pain ask your vet for some banamine for pain. DO NOT milk her she will just produce more. If she has a kid take it away from her and feed it for her. You may have to separate her for a bit too. She is bullying because of the pain and you can give her a shot of penicillin in her udders if too bad. Good luck

Have you tried using "Today" or "Tommorrow" for her mastitis? I just used Today on my doe along with peniciilin injections IM. Her mastitis is now clear. Also do you have mastitis indicator cards, they sure help to catch an infection early.
Hope she feels better soon!

Yes get her dried up and then I recommend not breeding her again with the mastitis problem.. if it is cystic ovaries I am surprised she gets pregnant.. I had a pygmy doe that was cystic and she cycled rapidly and thankfully I never bred her and the worst thing she took on was a mild buck disposition.. tongue flapping and riding my other does.. there is treatment for cystic ovaries if not too far gone but with proper care and nutrition she should be able to live out her years!
