Hi Everyone. Our ND s are about 6 months old now. Our Whether was banded at 9 weeks and has been "without his marbles" for some time. Recently he has begun peeing on his legs, sticking his nose in the doelings pee, and biting at his remaining boy parts. Is this normal behavior or do I need to be concerned. My daughter said he mounted the doeling twice this morning, but I hadn't seen him do that more than once or twice since he was banded. I believe she may be currenlty in heat..but I am a newbie goat owner so I don't know for sure. Any advice?

As long as you got both testicles below the band you're fine. Some wethers will act bucky, others not so much...it's individual to the animal. If there's any concern that you missed a testicle then you should make an appointment with the vet to check it out.

If they "act bucky" do they get as smelly?

My Nubian / Boer Cross whether will mount the girls when they are in heat. But as Elevan said, if you are sure that both testicles are gone, you should be ok.

Did you do the banding or did someone else. Is it possible that he has a testicle that did not descend and therefore was not caught with the banding?

I am new to goats. Someone else did the banding who is very familiar with the process. However, this morning he was aggressiveley mounting the doe, has peed all over his belly and legs. He is also making little noises when we pull him away from her and sticking out his tongue. This is why I did NOT want a male:( At this point I threw him in a smaller cage near her. Is there a way to tell if he is a stupid whether or if he is still a full buck? (Sorry I am very frustrated at this point) Will Vicks in his nostrils work? Is it scent that is setting him off? Does anyone know of a goat vet in CT that can check him out and make sure he is an it? I also worry about infection form him trying to mount her. They are only 6 months old so they are way too young for breeding safely and they are brother and sister as well. Uggh, I am soo frustrated right now.

I was able to speak to someone near me who reassured me that his behavior is normal..even for a whether. My hisband said he is fine with her now and just pestering her occasionally. He said she seems quite interested so ahe must be in full blown heat. Sigh, there is SO much to learn...

:/ Well, we took him into the vet to make sure. It appears that he is still half a man. While two sacs feel off him, only one included marbles. There is one testicle right under his belly. Luckily, the vet did an ultrasound and it appears to be right beneath the skin and she can correct it surgically. On the down side my little whether is going to cost me much more in vet bills that it cost to buy him! It's a good thing he's cute! and that he will have a purpose one our farm. He will be the nanny for any bucklings that are born.

You will probably need to get some lutalyse from the vet to abort your young does, It is normally done 11 days after exposure and breeding.

a wether may act bucky, but they can not get an erection and pee on themselves.

It's a good thing you took him to the vet! Now you know and you won't have to worry about any surprise babies in your future. Banding would not have worked no matter how well it was done and surgical castration would have needed to be done in any case.
