Just started homesteading on 5 acres im March. This season we made a huge dent in the feeder animals of our choice Rabbits/Chickens. Hope to start a garden next year. I am here to learn and hope to teach as well. I am a city guy that spent the first 14 years in CA, then 15 in Kansa City, MO. Now we have found our slice of heaven in the twin lakes area here in Mountain Home, AR.

I have mastered the chickens for the most part but the rabbits are another story. I hope to learn what I need to know in order to put some meat on the table. Dont get me wrong. I do love animals but with the cost of everything going up and being jobless for over a year I have to produce where ever I can just to get by. We had our fist rabbit meal already and it was way better then any meat ive had.

Remembering back to my childhood my grandfather was a millionaire but he ate more bbq rabbit then anyone I know. He raised them just like I am trying to do. He also raised chickens. I will say that in this day it has its challenges though. We have industry telling us that it cost more to raise then buy at the store. I know that was never the case back when gpa did it. I hope to work around all the hoops and make this a profitable venture as well as teach my children. My oldest is 2 (lil girl). Our other child (boy) is on the way and is due Oct 27th. Our oldest already loves playing with the animals and we walk together most every day to feed them.

I get real tired of the "in croud" on a certain popular website making me feel gross or wrong in general for doing this. Last I seen most everyone on earth was eating chicken. Rabbit to me is better so why not. I just try not to let the negative comments get to me. Thanks for letting me into your group.

Glad to have you here. Check almost any section of the forum here and you will find meat discussion surrounding the animal. You will find a good mix of hobbyist to working animals as an occupation. We may not always agree in approach but it is in that depth of experience and approach that we all learn more.

Thanks for the info. I am new to all of it and have a fresh canvas. I am not hard headed and I just want to know what the best way is to do what I do. Most humane etc etc. If my grand father where still here im sure he would have influenced me and I would have been grateful but in my life so far all I have had is a search engine. On this side of it though I think that I found the rite place to go rather then just watching video, it should be a lot better to learn here and get the facts.

In some ways I wish I was born in my great-grandparent's time. When you knew what your food was...where it came from...what went into it and so on. I'm trying to do that for my family. We're raising a beef calf, chickens, turkey, guinea and quail for the table and eggs. I feel better knowing where my food is coming from. Large commercial operations make the food in the grocery store seem cheaper but since the nutrients are often lower you're really having to put more into your body to get what you need.

I think you've come to the right place and we're glad you're here.

Well thank you kind sir. Sounds like you have your hands full, but no doubt just the way it should be. You totally just gave me an eye opener. When I go shopping for the month for just me, wife and 2 year old I have to fill 2 carts full. Its funny how that creeps up on you with out noticing. Looking back it seemed like one cart or $100 went so much further. Maybe when I get the animals down that I have now I should look into expanding. I could see that. Well thanks again.
