I am new to owning goats. We got our 1st 2 boys in June. Love them. I have 2 questions. 1st my older goat Tack constantly chases his brother Charlie kind of like yelling at him pushing him and biting him. He does not bite hard. Does anyone know what this means. 2nd question. The same goat Tack chases one of my dogs and try's to mount him. Why? Thanks

Are they neutered? If the boys aren't neutered, then you are dealing with hormones and I would have them neutered asap. They will go into rut and then pee on themselves and then they stink too.

Goats are herd animals and do establish a herd order. Obviously the one guy wants to be in charge. Goats do play hard, especially males.

Seconded.

I would also say that if you are not intending breeding then there would be no reason to keep intact bucks, and put them and you through this testosterone rage.

I third the motion to neuter them if they have not been done. If you're not breeding, bucks are no fun at all. Actually...they're not a lot of fun usually if you are breeding. They stink, they pee on themselves and sometimes your shoes, they stink, they get aggressive, they stink....not a good pet.

If they are wethers, you're just seeing a dominance display. The one doing the chasing has established himself as the boss, and is letting his buddy and the dog know. It's normal behavior, there is almost always one in a herd that is picked on by the others, and one that is an aggressive leader-type. Just be sure not to allow him to show that behavior to people, discipline him very hard about that, or he could become dangerous when he is bigger.

Thanks everyone. We have not had them nuetered bacause we are going to get some females and breed them. Come this spring. I really love my goats and I think they love me too. Everytime they see me they call me and they love to rub their heads on me. Just wish I could tell how old they are.

They can be quite affectionate. I love to just sit out in the pen and love on my girls.

If they are over a year but under 4 years old or so, you can get an accurate age by looking at the front teeth. The baby teeth look different than the adult teeth, and they will get their adult teeth in a predictable pattern during that time period. http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/determiningage.html This might help.
