5/6/2023 - thank you for all the input, baby is doing good today and face looks a bit less puffy but definitely has a rounded nose area :)

Hi all, looking for opinions on the shaping and overall condition of our newborn goat's head area. I will include some background and photos. So in particular I always grew up with and raised Nubians, so this definitely had me asking questions. It's been a long time since I've had the chance to be with a newborn kid. Here is some background including just overall condition of kid if that helps also. I am just a bit in a tizzy wanting to make sure baby is alright:

IMG_5605.jpgIMG_5606.jpg

-Dad is 100% purebred Nubian, Mom is Boer mix (I am unfamiliar with breed and hoped someone experienced with breed could tell me if newborns had this head/nose shape) and mom favors Boer heaving but you can tell looking at her it is not 100%.

-Kid was born this morning, and unfortunately due to rejection by mom we are bottle raising. Mom only threw a single kid which was quite a whopper comparatively, wondered if the size maybe impacted ease of birth and possibly caused swelling. I've been trying to keep an eye on her but of course mom gave birth before I made it to their barn.

-Condition wise, Mom is not letting milk out. I tried to massage and get any out but no luck so far. I am unsure if that is a possible cause or not, but not only is she a first time mom she also has four nipples, so I did try all four with no success. We did get colostrum from veterinarian as I panic called almost immediately when I realized the kid was rejected and mom was not giving milk. They were super busy but helped us very quickly.

-We had a good feed at 11:15 AM so kid is eating well. Very all around healthy and in good shape- vocal, standing, wagging, alert. We came inside and got warmed up before the feeding.

May be TOO much info LOL but just want to provide any helpful background. Nervous new "parent" I guess hah

On to try and get some more blankets from the thrift store :) Thank you so much for any help

That's a very pronounced roman nose! Sorry mom doesn't love it. If baby can suckle and swallow with no problems, that's a great sign. I'd check the bite also - even though it's generally not a life and death problem. Bottom teeth should match up to hard palate on top. Other than that - it's got a very regal profile!

@frustratedearthmother - thank you very much for your help and response. I will check his bite for sure but so far we finished our second feeding and he had a good movement of both types of potty and ate healthy again. Still very alert, active, chatty. I definitely wondered if he had just a very strong roman nose but I felt it would be more comforting to ask for other opinions.

The Boer are roman nosed! And, Nubians we're but, some has been bred out to being less dramatic. Also first Boer imports, back in early to mid 90s were 4 teated, all worked. It was really nice when they had trips -- Xtra faucets 😁 Some Boer can still be found with a foursome but, harder to find.

You have a normal kid. 🥰. By the way, Boer are known for fast growth and they will consume more than the other breeds quite often. Watch the doe, she may come into milk. So be prepared.

@Mini Horses Thank you so much for writing. I am comforted by your input and frustratedearthmother's in knowing he's okay in this part. It's been a long time so I wanted to make sure! I have been checking mom every few hours about the time I feed him to be sure. I had read up very early on when we first got her and noticed the 4 teats that it could be found in Boer, and she very much favors the breed but not fully. My first gut thought seeing him was that maybe he had the rounded nose and shorter face I had seen on some Boer, but I am a worrier at times so I wanted to be sure.

Last feeding he is still doing well, ate and went potty and very active. I hope we continue on a positive path :)

Thanks again to you both!
