I've been looking at getting a bunny to have for inside for a pet for me and my kids. What are your opinions on the homemade cube type cages? Do they work to keep the bunny in and keep the feces in the cage? I'd attempt to litter box train the bunny and let it have time out of the cage supervised. (I raised rabbits 10+ years ago for 4H) I don't want to use one of my metal cages b/c even with a tray the feces/urine doesn't always stay where it's supposed to.... but was think I could make a cube and set it into a "box" or something that would keep everything in it's place. thanks

They can work, but you need to find and only use the ones with the small square holes.
For urine, no second levels until it's potty trained. Make high walls along the bottom, I'd say at least 6in. You'll need to use that chloroplast stuff from frame shops or carpet runner from Lowes.
Section off the cage so it's small, only room for the toilet, food/water and a small area to lay down. Keep moving all droppings into the toilet, but if you see it prefers a different corner, move the toiled to that spot. Once it is consistently going in the toilet, expand the cage some. And keep doing that until the cage is at it's full size.

We built one about 8 months back for our now year old mini satin. It is a 30 inch cube with two levels. I took some scrap plywood and put some rolling wheels on it. The cage rests on this base. It makes cleaning around the cage easier. Our bun throws hay and some pellets around the base so we have to sweep up every few days or so. Nothing too crazy.

We went to the hardware store and bought some really cheap grey "carpet" material and stuffed this inside some fleece we bought cheap from a store closing sale. This is used to line the first floor and the second so the rabbit is never on the wire directly and can't get a foot caught either. She happily bounds around when she is feeling perky. We bought a fair amount of the cube material so what we do is build a temporary run from it and place more of the fleece on the floor. So at least once a week she gets a much larger 4 foot square run attached to her cage so she can actually run a loop from the top level to the outside corner. She does this less now that she is approaching a year old.

As for litter training we started her in the typical too small cage. Once we saw which corner she liked we put the litter box there. When we moved her up to the cube we put the litter box in the back corner and all is well.

Good luck.

My boys had a "cube" mansion in my room that worked great until they started intentionally spraying urine outside the cage.

I think 4" guards around the sides would have fixed that problem, but the fur was causing asthma so the buns got moved outside anyway.

I used fleece as a floor covering and loved it! For the most part we had minimal poop nuggets outside the cage. It's important to keep it clean to keep them from flying everywhere every time a bunny jumps, but I only ran a quick vaccum over the fleece once or twice a week, and washed the fleece monthly. The fleece that was seriously soiled with urine was washed weekly, but if they have a specific place you can just use a litter box :)

They usually had lots of toys and boxes, this was the day I built it so it's still bare and the zip ties hadn't been trimmed
