She said there are almost always bottle babies from first time moms who can't care for triplets, or are having a problem of some kind. (She has a pretty large herd of Boers.) IIRC, She tests every 6 months or whenever a new goat enters the herd, which is rare. We saw her setup and were impressed with the cleanliness of her barns and general health of the herd...and her beautiful Anatolian/Pyrenees LGD who clearly has everything under control!

I like to give people the benefit of the the doubt on being honest, sometimes that comes back to bite me. But if you are getting bottle babies chances are they wouldn't be exposed to CL unless the dam were to have an abscess at the time of delivery. So hopefully your breeder is honest and the goats are all clear. Some Boer breeders vaccinate for CL too which will give a positive test.

If you were buying older stock it would be more critical. More and more Boer breeders are testing, but it is still pretty rare. I raise all dairy now but had a mixed herd for years and my Boers had to be clean as my dairy herd was clean and I wanted it to stay that way.

Can I ask the name of the breeder? If you don't want to say that is ok too.

Yeah, I'll pass on naming her. She's got a good rep locally (small community) and has been very gracious with her time. Sure wouldn't want her to get flamed on my account.

I understand and respect your thinking. We would (hopefully) never flame, we aren't that kind of group (at least we try not to be). I just wondered if it was someone I knew or if my friends have any of her stock. There are a lot of goats down here from OR.

We would love to see pictures of your shelter you are building for them and of course the babies when you get them. Raising baby goats is so much fun, you might find it really hard to eat a bottle baby though. :hide They can wiggle right into your heart very easily.
