I bred my Mini Rex doe (assuming that's what she really is, she weighs 7 lbs.) to my NZWXCali Buck. Yet, I got a peanut in the litter. Hmmmmmm....I thought I read somewhere you had to get a double dose of the dwarf gene to get a peanut?

I was told my buck was a Purebred Cali when I bought him, but his markings are black with a little brown (as in his feet markings are brownish) and he's around 12.5 lbs last I checked. I'm assuming there's got to be some NZ in him, because I purchased my NZW Doe from the same breeder who deals with NZW's and Cali's. Wow, all this assuming is......well, you know the saying.

Any thoughts?

(The only thing I'm absolutely positive about is the peanut  )

I'd like to see the animal in question. Are you sure it's a genetic peanut and not just a smaller rabbit? Curved rump, bulbous skull, unable to feed, and useless backlegs?

At seven pounds your Mini Rex is more than double the size of a non-genetically dwarf mini rex. I'd guess whoever you bought it from called it mini since it's not of a suitable standard rex size.

As far as the californian x nz white animal. He'll exhibit poor markings due to carrying one "c" gene from the NZ used in the cross. Proper cals will be genetically ch ch instead of ch c. This will cause the color to look washed out and faded.

Rabbits with the weight you describe it doesn't seem feasible for them to be carrying a dwarf gene. It's a co-dominant gene and not something that can hide recessively for generations. Unless if it was a tiny mini rex buck bred to a whopper of a rex doe and it managed to get to 7.5 pounds, I'd still think it'd be less than 5. Even the first ND x Rex crosses when the breed was started were under six pounds.
