So I went out to feed the dogs after dinner and found out my Nubian FF Poppy had her baby....a cute little doeling! :celebrate she had cleaned her off well but was still doing a lot of pawing after she passed the afterbirth and had stomped the little one a couple times. She seemed completely unaware that she might hurt the baby by stepping on her...saw her do this numerous times when the little one was getting her legs. Baby is a little clued out searching for the teat and mom was kicking her when she was getting close. :he I held Poppy and got the teat in the mouth and some suckling but neither seems too excited about it, kid never got the tail wagging and I would have to put the teat right into her mouth before she would suck if I got her close she couldn't find it herself even after suckling a few seconds before.

I put some hay out, mom was happily eating, I grabbed the kid to see if she would even care or notice....nothing. :huSo I brought the kid inside gave a bottle to fill up her tummy. Went outside, mom is acting without a care in the world....I got her on the milk stand milked out her colostrum and she did amazing, no kicking or squirming, so I was thrilled with that! :clapNow that it is dark she is running around the pasture crying and bawling...she only now remembered 3 hours later that she had a baby! Jeesh!

Baby seems to be doing good but Poppy is making me feel guilty for pulling the kid, but honestly I would never forgive myself if I found her dead from being stepped on. I kind of wanted a bottle baby for a milker (all my other Nubians are bottle babies) but don't want to overstress Poppy. I hope she gets over it fast.:barnie

I'll get pics tomorrow, my camera's setting is messed up and everything turns out blurry. :(

You are the owner and you were there at the time to witness what was going on, so no one can tell you did the wrong thing or the right thing. There are thousands of goats that are pulled and bottle raised every year. If you were going to pull her pulling the kid now is a lot less tramatic than pulling them after the mom has had them for a couple of months (in my opinion). Poppy will be fine and you have an adorable bottle babby. CONGRATS!

They will both be fine. After a day they usually pipe down and forget about the fact they had a kid and go on about their goat lives. The baby will think your momma and all will be good. :) Good luck.

Well we made it through the night...brutal because our bedroom is surrounded by pasture and she is still hollaring like crazy but we got this far so we will just bear with it now. Gotta go milk her out again. Baby is doing awesome!

thanks everyone for the reassurance and congrats. I think I was particularily sensitive as I recently gave birth and couldn't imagine having my baby taken away....on the otherhand I also wouldn't be stomping my baby either. :thShe seems to settling down now and look forward to our milking relationship. :clap
