Hi, we have pigs (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!) for the very first time and are sooooooo happy about it :D

But now the worry sets in lol.

Our pigs are at our 4H grounds and I suddenly remembered a pig from last year. They had a batch of 4 and one of them got sick, not bad sick, just a runny nose, but then it never grew. It stayed small until butcher day but the biggest disappointment was it was supposed to be the start of a breeding herd. The boor in fact.

So!

What caused his stunting?

Is it contagious?

Will it still be in the soil after 4 months of blazing sunshine?

And if so, how do we prevent OUR pigs getting it?

Does anyone know what we can do to boost the health of our three pigs? Two pigs in the pen next to ours are now sick and no one knows whats wrong with them.

Sounds like Atrophic Rhinitis, which is a disease that makes the bones in their nose atrophy. Their noses become shortened, and often bend either up or to the side. They sneeze, and mucus comes out of their nostrils. This disease will cause stunting and slow growth. It's contagious, and there is no cure.

Pigs from SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) herds are not infected, and only become infected if exposed to pigs that are carrying the pathogen.

This disease caused millions of $$$ in losses to the pork industry, but has been mostly eradicated in large commercial herds. The remaining pockets of infection are usually in small herds that often swap or obtain breeding stock from numerous places.
