Ok not sure if this is the right area but here goes. If you have one piglet, girl by the way, and you hand raise her and she follows you around the yard for treats and such. Is it possible to have a nice well behaved adult piggy or at some point is she going to turn on me? I got her at auction and she is the smartest, sweetest thing. Follows me everywhere if I let her. I was thinking of getting her a buddy because I am not sure I will be able to eat her so I was thinking of keeping her to breed and then eat her buddy. Her name is petunia by the way. Also is there a breed of pig that is known for being a bit nicer? I have heard that out of all the different breeds durocs are the meanest nastiest creatures.

If you bring in another pig then she will change somewhat but might still be up for a scratch. If it was me I would fatten her up, have fun with her over the months then sit down to a nice pulled pork meal with friends
We have 15 purebred Large Black & Hampshire pigs at the mo 10 for the farm shop and 5 for breeding.
The Large Blacks are huge, very docile and easy to handle, the Hamps knock me around a bit more but still good to work with.

I believe if you raise a pig as a pet, it will always be nice if it's nice now. Have you ever read "The Good, Good Pig" ? It's an amazing story of a huge pig the author had as a pet for about 20 years---can't remember exactly how old the pig was at his demise. I bawled like a baby at the end. I raised a pig for butcher 2 summers ago, and wish I would have just kept her for a pet. She was never agressive toward me, and I kind of still feel bad about taking an animal that trusted me to slaughter. I'm sure some on here would like to berate me for being such a softie, but that's how I am. If you're really attached to your pig, I say don't have her butchered----you may not forgive yourself.

i had a farmer friend that would give me runt pigs, and i would raise them up as pets. when they got to be too big, i just could not send to the butcher, so too to an auction. i told myself someone would buy them (girls) for breeing sows. don't know for sure, but sure sounded good.
