One of our llamas was accidentally bred last summer around July 20-25. We never did any pregnancy testing on her, so we're playing the wait and see game. If she is pg, shed' be due in a few weeks. I'm trying to figure out if she looks pg. What do you think?

Hi Sonja,

It certainly is possible but with all the fiber it is hard to tell. The best would be to have a vet palpate her but not sure if you have a good camelid vet in your area. My vet rectally palpates but she has very small hands and can easily do that. She has also been doing alpacas for over 12 years and has a lot of experience.

I think you probably won't know for sure until she delivers or not. Sorry for not being definite. Good luck with your girl. Hopefully if she is pregnant, everything will go well.

Hi Sonja - Do you have pictures of her from when you got her? Llamas can be really hard to tell but I'm going to say yes she's preggers from those pictures. I say that because it really looks like she's got that 'beach ball' belly going on. A healthy llama that isn't overweight won't typically have that round of a belly. It is really hard with all that fleece like ksalvagno said. I shear my girls each year and that really helps to see their bellies much better.

Some of my girls are quite obvious that they are pregnant about 2 weeks before they deliver. I have one girl that I can look her over and not think she's pregnant and then have a cria on the ground a couple of days later!

I also have one girl who is way overweight (she came to me that way and it's really hard to take weight off a llama in my situation) and she always looks pregnant. This year she was... we got another beautiful little girl from her two days ago!

Thanks Cindy. The first 2 pics are of Dolly when we got her, and the last 2 are her today. I don't remember her being this round. Her vulva is looking more pink too. I tried to get a picture, but she wouldn't stand still. I'm planning on shearing them, but with the rainy weather we haven't been able too. Here's hoping we'll have a cria!!

She looks pregnant but has she been on a lot of pellet feed? Check her teats and her vulva for swelling. Sometimes it is just a waiting game. Did you buy her bread or did you breed her after you got her.

She gets very little pellet food, and we're out right now. She's on grass hay and pasture. I haven't gotten a good view of her teats, but her vulva does look slightly swollen. I'm not sure if she's bred or not. Before we got her the previous owners male llama got out and visited with our girls at least once.

Did you do a spit test or do you not have males? That technique is not a positive test but could give you some indication. Guess you will just have to wait and see ... not that that is so easy as we don't make good stepparents

Its kind of hard to tell if they have a lot of fleece. We have a pg alpaca girl who's now around 300 days. Before she was shorn, you really couldn't see the size of her belly. Now that she has been shorn, it is quite easy to see that she is in fact pg.

Spit testing her with a male, getting a progesterone level, ultrasound or palpation can all be used to determine if she is in fact pregnant.

Even if she isn't pregnant, she really should be shorn too.

She did spit at the male before we brought her home. The woman we got her from had 4 llamas. Our mama and her daughter, another female, and the intact male. We took mama and daughter and the other 2 went to another family.
