We picked up a pair of potbellies on the weekend.
We really just got them as "working pets" for the farm but they are a boar & sow.

I read over most of the old threads here so I'm hoping I'm not going to get any emotional responses here.

The little boy seems to be trying to mate the little girl, I don't know how old they are, they are very small I would guess a few months at most.
Is separating them the only thing to do? Or is he just "practicing"?
I only saw him doing this yesterday (right after we brought them home) so I'm wondering if it was more of a 'comfort' thing.
We've only got the two & they were cuddling last night for warmth in the barn so I really don't want to separate them, but I don't want them breeding so young either.

Secondly there is such a wide variety of opinions on their meat :idunno. I've read they don't make any bacon, that the bacon is really good, that the meat is tough and flavourful, and and that it is mild and fatty, or lean, or you get tons, or it's non-existent.

I'm quite happy to keep two small pigs to help with the garden work :) but we'd also like meat pigs in the future, if we can combine these things, that would be great.
All the info I can find on successful crossbreeds never had any follow up (so I assume it failed?) or has anyone found a good pig to cross to?

Hello,
I have been looking into getting a potbelly pig or two as livestock. I have a lady that I would be getting mine from that raises them for meat and to clean up her garden area. As far as I have read, your sow can be bred as early as 2 months... but usually sexual maturity hits around 3 to 4 months. So, unless you are ready for piglets in 114 days, I would suggest seperating them. She will be coming into heat every 21 days when she does start.

I thought this was good reading http://www.windridgefarm.us/potbellypigs.htm
