This is the third week I've had my little Shetlands, and they are so quiet! I've heard one of them baahh quickly just a couple times, but not a word from any of the others. They will come to me now when I call them, and seem comfortable in their new surroundings, so I don't think that's an issue with them. Will they eventually become more noisy and expressive as they get older? Are some breeds louder than others? When do your sheep "blat" or do they rarely make a sound? I must admit that I'm a bit surprised (and maybe a little disappointed!) by how quiet they are.

Their own personalities can often make a difference too. I have 3 - one is virtually silent, one baahs softly when I approach, and the other screams bloody murder without stopping if I'm even remotely within any semblance of a line of sight. :hu

Some of my Shetlands are pretty quiet, but there are a couple that talk a lot and they have very LOUD voices!

Some sheep are naturally loud all the time for no reason. Other sheep are only loud when they see you and are expecting to be fed. Others don't make any noise at all.

I have one sheep that falls into the first category, five in the second, and three in the last.

Sheep change year to year, too. Like the one who doesn't make any noise at all, last year, she would always make noise when she saw me coming with feed. One who used to be quiet last year is now one that yells at me when I bring her her feed.

Thanks everyone! That gives me an idea of what to expect. It sounds like they are a lot like people; some voice their opinion about everything, and others rarely say a word! I'm also discovering that they each have such different personalities, and that makes them so much fun to have around.

Most of my sheep are pretty silent, but I have one ewe who follows me around when I'm doing chores in their "clubhouse", and yells at me if she thinks I forgot something or didn't do something right. :)

I have noisy sheep when they see me...always wanting a treat

But...if there is a problem, or one of them is starting to go into labour, the sound is different and I've always been glad they do that!

My sheep are Katahdin and Dorper.
Out of the 5 that I currently have, only 2 make really REALLY loud noises.

Depends on the individual sheep I guess!

Mine are Katahdin and Dorper too...you should hear them in the pasture by the gate when they get a sprinkle of rain on them...you'd think they were dying of rain exposure  Of course we spoil them...take them back to home base to get under the shelters.:p
