*Warning this is probably a Rant*

So here's the thing I've been debating doing a post but I finally decided to tell you guys since I definitely have the cast :( that I was planning on getting a trio of Standard Rex rabbits for meat this fall but that was before I fell and was told I needed to be in a cast for six weeks because of spraining and pulling ligaments in my stupid ankle and having a crush fratcure to my fibula. So now that my big plans are postponed and I'm having to ask my mom to help me take care of the chickens and one rabbit I do have, being on crutches and all it's hard to carry gallon waterers and stuff... I guess I just need to sit back and do some more research about how to house them and read a few more books on caring for meat rabbits.

Can anyone recommend any good books about meat rabbits?

What is a good size to make their cages or what website do you recomend getting cages from?

Same question as above but for a grow out pen or two :)

And last but most important does anybody breed Standard Rex's in Alabama or South West Tennessee?

If anyone can answer those specific questins it would get me one step closer and if not Thanks for letting me rant! ;D

:hugs I hope you get better soon :hugs . A good book , one of my favorites, is ''Raising Rabbits by Ann Kanable''. It is a good book for meat rabbits and cage sizes.

The Official Guide Book to Raising Better Rabbits & Cavies is a good book. When you join ARBA, they send you the book for free. It has a lot of information in it. other than that, I don't know any books specifically about meat rabbits. Most of my other rabbit books are about pet rabbits and the different breeds and care.
And here are a few good sites to buy cages from:
http://www.klubertanz.com/
http://clover.forest.net/kwcages/index.html
I know there's a few other good sites that sell cage units, I can't think of them at the moment though. And size of cage would all depend on the breed. For smaller breeds 24 x 24 is the minimum. For meat rabbits depending on the size, I would suggest something a big bigger, maybe 24 x 30 or 30 x 36. All the breeds I raise are small and around 4 to 5 pounds, so don't know on the exact size of cage you would need for meat rabbits.
Well, hope this helps and hope you get better soon!! :hugs

Sorry to read about your break. Hope you are back on your feet in no time. I look forward to reading the books that were suggested also.

My Suggestion:

"Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits" by Bob Bennett. This book goes into really good detail of how to set up a "meat" rabbitry. It's also has some good diagrams on how to build your cages as well. I'm interested in the rabbit compost section of the book. The bunnies can help with our garden, which by the way will have their greens in it when they are ready for them.
