I have 10 Katahdin ewes ready to breed and have decided to breed to a good "terminal" ram for meat production instead of focusing on purebred production at this time. Interested in hearing others thoughts & experiences on breeding their Katahdin females to another breed of ram for producing meat. What breeds have worked out well?

Thanks,
Mark

Personally loved the Dorset/Katahdin crosses, as long as you're serious about "terminal" since hair and wool mixes are horrible the first few generations.

The chosen ram is fully ONE HALF of a flock so buy the best quality ram that you can find. For best and most profitable results, I would use rams from a large
purebred commercial flock ( not from a backyard source as more often than not , most are lacking quality). As for the best sire of a cross bred, I would use a Dorper, Suffolk , standard Southdown, or Dorset.

Thanks for the info. I will check them out and look around the area and see what's available.
