i found one of my does this morning...Dead and stiff
she was perfectly fine when i checked on her last night, eaten no problem but had not drank much yesterday...this morning go out to feed and she was dead, on her side, straight with her legs stretched straight out and her head back.
I skined and opend her up to see if i could find any kind of signs of illness because it was so sudden, but heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach and intestines all looked normal, bladder was empty.
nose, butt, eyes and ears all perfectly clear and shed showed no signs of illness...
once i got her all cleaned up i did open up the stomach to see if there was signs of blockage, and everything looked perfectly normal in there...poop in the intestines was normal Bunny berries no soft or underformed stuff...
her body cavity did have a fairly deacent amount of fat...but ive never processed a adult rabbit so i dont know how much fat in the ody caivty woudl be "normal" she was chunky when i got her, but weve been working on her weight and she seemed like a perfectly nice healthy size and weight for her built...
Worse was shes was a week away from delivering 6 kits (counted them when i necorpsied her) so sad, so frustrating but the only conclusion i can come to is something spooked her and either her little heart gave out or she jumped/twisted funny and broke her neck...internally there was NO signs of illness, no blockage, normal poop ect...
from what i was told when i got her she was 3 yrs old.
Im REALY upset to not only loose her but loose her entire litter too only a week away from due date...but rabbits arnt exactly built to handle "stress" so im thinking spooky...she wasnt exactly the calmest of buns...
Ill be keeping a very close eye on my buns over the next couple of weeks incase it was something...but ugh.
i think the worst part is not knowing...
I opend her up in hopes of finding something obvious, a tumor, funky organs, liver spots...something...but finding nothing has now left me with the "what ifs" and "what could have happends".
*sigh*
im pretty particular about feed so i know its not that, there eating manapro pellet, timmothy hay, and various fresh organic veggies (mostly kale, turnip greens and carrot tops right now and red and white clover (no pesticides at all!).
there was no signs of anything trying to get into her hutch, the other rabbits seem fine, no stress, eating and drinking normally, theres no signs of any runny poops.
Water was fresh and its filtered city water.
there not exposed to the ground, and havent been in contact with any other bunnies, this is an outdoor set up so toxins in the environment are unlikely, temps have been in the 70's the past few days with lows in the 40's no signs of panting or heat stress in her or any of the others
Its never easy to loose one...
its even harder to loose one only a week away form due date (she had 6 nice sized kits just waiting...and i cant help but wonder if id gotten to them sooner i could have c-sectioned and kept them alinve....but a week early in an animal with such a short gestation i doubt theyd have made it even if i had...)
But whats worse is not knowing WHY...
According to the breeder i got her from she was 3 yrs old, and had previously kindled sucessfully about 8 months ago.
Ugh, i hate not knowing why!
