My girl...about 2 1/2 months is having some dark colored urine. She is acting and eating fine. I have looked up everything under the sun and really cant find anything that says "this is it' KWIM? We dont have a vet yet (man there hard to find in my area) She is on sweet feed, hay, and grass, leaves etc...

Any idea's of what it might be?

Dark urine is a serious red flag...and could be caused by a host of things.

I don't know how to advise you other than to rule out dehydration first, because I would want a vet to check out the problem if it were me.

You might save some time by getting a urine sample (clean cup on a stick and lots of patience!) and bringing it in for a look-see before the vet comes out. Could be an infection of some kind. The vet will need to see what is in the urine before prescribing antibiotics, if that is what it is. If you get a sample, put it in the fridge until you can get it there. Call first to see if this would be useful. It all depends on the vet. He/she will still need to see the animal, I would think.

Don't mess around with this one.

When you say "some" dark colored...do you mean it just happens occasionally, or does it happen all the time? When it happens, is it just the first of the pee and then turn back normal clear/yellow, or is it dark the entire time?

Also...the thread is titled "red colored," but then you say "dark colored" in the message body.. Is it dark, or red? Or dark red?

There are several things that could be going on here.. Flukes and copper poisoning cause hemoglobinuria, but I frankly wouldn't suspect either of those in a 10wk old kid.

If the pee's kinda red at the beginning and then trails off normal, I'd suspect something urethral or urogenital.. If it's red throughout, could be kidneys or bladder..

There are some plants that cause dark/red pee, but I can't remember what they are..

If it's just dark...could be concentrated, which would indicate that she may be dehydrated. Does she have access to fresh water all the time, and if so, is she using it?

I've also read about goats getting dark/red pee when fed water from a bottle...I dunno what kind of truth there is to that, but with her being 10wks.......are you weaning her with water by any chance?

ETA: Yeah...I'll 3rd the motion to get a sample to a vet, ASAP.

I don't know if it affects kids that age, but leptospirosis can cause bloody urine. I would think any vet who can handle other livestock would be able to test a sample for you, even if they don't know much about goats. Or at least they could direct you to a lab that can.
