So, my husband and I just bought a 5 acre farm-ready property. The people before us had meat goats and didn't use all the property. All but where the house and buildings sit, the property is all pasture/field. Is it possible to raise pigs (very much contained) on pasture only? I've been reading on the heritage breeds and am thinking about getting Large Blacks, Tamrocks, or Durocs. Also, I'm wanting to raise pigs for meat....but would also like to breed....maybe? lol Should I just start with a few pigs to eat or jump right in with breeding?

Just so you know, I'm not getting ANY animals until Spring at the very earliest. I like to do a TON of research before jumping in. ;)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, for your help!

Get something that interests YOU. A few to start so you have time to learn what they are going to teach you is best... a couple or few for breeding and one or two for the freezer isn't too hard to do.

Thank you! I think that's just what I'll do. :) Do you know if heritage pigs can be raised on pasture only or mostly pasture?
