My mare has a sarcoid on the very edge of her ear. I thought it was a wart for the longest time, but since this summer with the flies and all, my mare has been rubbing her face and ears a lot. Even with a fly mask and spray, she rubs her face and ears on the fence. The sarcoid bleeds and then it gets bigger! The more she rubs it, the more it bleeds, and the bigger it gets! Its now bigger than a pea and growing out from the edge of her ear, not into the ear and I think it has a vein feeding it. Its now getting to the point where it really bleeds A LOT!

Should I call the vet? Will he remove it? Has there been any successful treatments out there for sarcoids? Even if it isn't removed, I'd be happy if I could just get it to dry up and stop bleeding all the time!

You have several options..... I would call your vet as soon as possible, as the sacroid will continue to grow larger, they more it is 'bothered' the more it expands in size.

Treatment can be freezing, surgically removing or an ointment called Exxtera that kills the cancer cells.

I had one horse that developed a sacroid on the side of his knee about the size of a dime. Since the location had no meat - more of a flesh over bone, freezing and surgery were not good options. The Exxtera is pricey, I think I paid 60 bucks for a 1 or 2 oz jar of it around 10 years ago. But a little dab it all it takes. I don't remember the treatment process, something like once a day for 4 days or something like that.

It will look very ugly then will start healing. Even the hair grew back which surprised me. I've loaned my jar out three times since then... the Exxtera has an infinite shelf life and still looks to have never been used.

Hope this helps - good luck and let us know what your vet says.

I will call the vet. Hopefully he can get out here within reasonable timing.

I did read about the exxterra and I was hoping that something like that would work. Glad to hear it was successful.

We'll see what the vet says first I suppose.

Well I tried the xxterra and within one application the sarcoid shriveled up like a raisin!! :clap

After a few more applications, it started to losen and today it fell off! There is still a small "stump" remaining and I put some xxterra on that and I imagine it will fall off soon. :D

This stuff is amazing!! :celebrate

My Barb mare developed one on the inside of one of her front legs, right above the chestnut, when she was three. It grew to about two inches across by the time she was five, and every time she would gallop or trot with a lot of knee action, it would crack and bleed and make her lame, so I decided to try treating it. My vet said normally she preferred to leave them alone, because removal can make them grow back worse or spread, but since this one was causing her so much trouble, we decided to remove it by freezing, like they do for warts on people.

After the procedure the vet said it would come off in layers; the top would flake off and then we'd probably have to repeat treatment a few times to get it all. Well, within a couple of days on stall rest after the treatment, the whole thing fell out of her leg like a big plug! It left a nasty wound that had to be cleaned and bandaged for a couple of weeks. And then it healed with a nasty looking scar, but the sarcoid didn't come back at all.

My mare had a second small sarcoid next to the first one that was treated and fell off. Once the bigger one fell off, the smaller one started to grow. I treated it immediately and it dried up and fell off too. No wounds to treat or anything and they don't appear to be coming back at all.

The cream I got is a version of xxterra and they even make human strength. It cost half as much as xxterra, it was just called bloodroot salve and I got it at altcancercream.com This small jar will probably last me the rest of my life. It has an indefinite shelf life too. Great stuff, I'll never be without it!

I use Crest Tarter Control toothpaste. I've yet to meet a sarcoid I couldn't get rid of given enough time.
