Maggie is a 2 1/2 mo old Nigerian Dwarf. She has had diarrhea for going on 3 days now. I prefer to wait a day or 2 if they are acting healthy otherwise, before treating with anything except pro-bios. She is a bottle fed baby, and is just now starting to eat grain and hay.

Today I texted my ruminate vet for advice...

At 1pm I gave an oral dose of Sulmet, 1/2 cc

At 4pm she was laying down, nibbling a corn cob from last nights dinner, but didnt want to get up. She had a poo covered bottom, and was holding her back legs out from her body. Her poo is green, runny (but not watery, more like runny pudding) and it stinks to high heaven! To me, bad smelling poo is a sign of infection or bacteria running rampant. But, that opinion comes from having human kids, and goats could be a totally different story (right?). She definately wasnt feeling good either way.

Called the vet.....got some advice.

I brought her in, gave her a cool bath, washed her back end off. Then came the not fun part- 1/2 cc of sub-Q pennicillian, 1/2 cc oral dose pennicillian, gave her her CD&T vaccination (she needed it anyways), gave her a dose of baking soda for her tummy. Now she in the house in a pen, screaming her head off at being locked up. I dont have any pedialyte, and she doesnt want to drink gatorade. Vet suggested not to give her any milk for a few hours.

Not sure what to do now. Dont want to put her back in general population, although I figure they have all been exposed by now to what she has. Now Im in a waiting game to see who gets symptoms first, and how to treat them since they are all different ages.

Will be posting further developments and treatments as they happen.

sounds bacterial, Spectam scour halt for pigs or neomycin may help, if she isn't doing better by tommorrow. The Penn G will also help. Did the vet tell you to vaccinate the kid?

yes, when I told her (vet) that Maggie wasnt vaccinated yet, she said to go ahead and do it. She also said she might consider giving her the tetnus antitoxin (different from the vaccination).

Oh, and I made a mistake! It wasnt sulmet I gave her this afternoon at 1pm, it was Spectrum scour halt for pigs! So she hasnt had sulmet yet.

Waiting to hear back from the vet as to when I can feed her milk. She hasnt had her dinner yet, and is acting kinda hungry, but not hungry enough to get up off the ground to come to me for food.

She did have about 5 ounces of gatorade around 4:30 this afternoon.

At 6 pm she didnt have anymore poo stuck to her rear end, so I am hoping the diarhea is clearing up.

Going to give 1/2 cc Spectrum in a few hours if the vet reccomends it.

I am very concerned that i dont hear gut sounds coming from her belly, and her belly is kinda tight. Cant hear sounds on the left or right side.

Maybe more baking soda is in order????

*siiiiiiiiigghh*

Its still bad. Been giving her gatorade, spectoguard, and kaopectate for 2 days with NO improvement.

Today I have started her on Sulmet (2 cc) and 1 cc of kaopectate.

She is still fairly hungry, still no gut sounds, has horrible poo all over her backside and down one leg, and on her sides of her rear. Its dark green now. She is still up and about, but its been 6 days now. I am soooo worried.....

Pro-bios?

I have a very sneaky suspicion- Could this be caused by the cheaper milk I have been buying from super-walmart? Still whole milk, just walmart brand and much cheaper than a regular grocery store.

Should I switch to a better brand? Switch to goats milk for awhile?

Yes, it could be from the cheaper brand. I ran into the same problem. Had been buying Smith's but happened to be at Walmart when I needed more milk. The kids got diarrhea. Switched back to Smith's and had no problems. I would go back to the better milk. I always thought that store bought milk was store bought milk but learned my lesson. Will just buy Smith's from now on if I need to bottle feed.

I would also get some Safeguard and give her 1cc per 10 lbs once a day for 3 days in a row. At 2.5 months, she could have other worm issues other than coccidia. But if you haven't treated her for coccidia, then I would also do that.

Have you treated for coccidia? And if you think it may be the milk have you thought about just weaning her? Is she eating hay? Grain?
