Maggie is a 2 1/2 mo old Nigerian Dwarf. She has had diarrhea for going on 3 days now. I prefer to wait a day or 2 if they are acting healthy otherwise, before treating with anything except pro-bios. She is a bottle fed baby, and is just now starting to eat grain and hay.
Today I texted my ruminate vet for advice...
At 1pm I gave an oral dose of Sulmet, 1/2 cc
At 4pm she was laying down, nibbling a corn cob from last nights dinner, but didnt want to get up. She had a poo covered bottom, and was holding her back legs out from her body. Her poo is green, runny (but not watery, more like runny pudding) and it stinks to high heaven! To me, bad smelling poo is a sign of infection or bacteria running rampant. But, that opinion comes from having human kids, and goats could be a totally different story (right?). She definately wasnt feeling good either way.
Called the vet.....got some advice.
I brought her in, gave her a cool bath, washed her back end off. Then came the not fun part- 1/2 cc of sub-Q pennicillian, 1/2 cc oral dose pennicillian, gave her her CD&T vaccination (she needed it anyways), gave her a dose of baking soda for her tummy. Now she in the house in a pen, screaming her head off at being locked up. I dont have any pedialyte, and she doesnt want to drink gatorade. Vet suggested not to give her any milk for a few hours.
Not sure what to do now. Dont want to put her back in general population, although I figure they have all been exposed by now to what she has. Now Im in a waiting game to see who gets symptoms first, and how to treat them since they are all different ages.
Will be posting further developments and treatments as they happen.
