I was at the barn not watching my young buck (5 months old) when he ran up behind me making the usual blubbering sound and then WHAM!!!!! He tried to mount me and I was not even bent over. Is this normal? Do they mount anything (and I do mean anything) when the hormones are raging? I have had three other bucks and they never tried this. Good grief.

Normal, but make sure you discipline him. That can be dangerous once they get big if you don't nip it in the bud now.

How do you guys reprimand your goats?
Humm, this is scary to answer. I'm imagining two mothers arguing over 'time outs' vs spanking... Words like "barbaric" and "push over" being thrown around! :smack At the risk of 'being stoned in the street', I'll try to describe my methods...

If it is an 'annoying behavior', I will try to remove the ability for the goat to continue the behavior (ex: If jumping on a car, I would no longer allow that goat to free-range in the front yard.). However, if it is a 'dangerous behavior' (such as any goat, regardless of sex or size, butting a human), I will use dominating body language and/or physical restraint.

Phase 1 = beard or chin raising, with a 'looming over' posture, direct and continuous eye contact with a wide-open eye - head 'cocked'. Other than the chin raising (to have some control and their attention for the moment), these are the same mannerisms your goats use with each other to assert dominance and discipline. I might also say a few choices words such as "freezer" or "dinner". I know they have no idea what those words mean, but it makes me feel better! I will continue this dominating behavior until the goat submits and backs away from me several steps. I kind of view it as a "three strikes" rule. I will give "phase 1" a try 3 times (each time increasing the amount of submission I require before releasing) before moving on to the heavy artillery / "phase 2".

Phase 2 = Same idea as "phase 1" but with the exception of instead of the chin raising, I will quickly flip the goat on to it's side and hold him/her down for a moment. Once again, I will perform this 3 times (each time increasing the time before releasing). This kind of simulates "getting knocked on their bxxx" / loosing a sparring match with a dominate goat. If after 3 times there is still an issue, I move onto "phase 3".

Phase 3 = Sell them for meat. I would not want to put someone looking for a pet at risk, nor would I want to use an aggressive animal for breeding.

I use phase 1 regularly, and have used phase 2 numerous times. I believe I have only ever made it to phase 3 with one buck, and subsequently one of his sons... As did a couple buyers we had sold his other kids to (relating back to the not wanting to sell an aggressive animal for breeding) prior to us realizing that his aggression would be passed down to the extent it did.

Well there it is.:hide I am hoping someone else will either get use of my suggestions, OR will post their strategy(s) (perhaps improving mine)!

After watching does with their kids... I start with pinching ears or bowl them over if they are bad enough.

Please be aware that aggressively horny buck goats are pretty normal. Sometimes you have to get aggressive too. Oreo, my year and a half old buck wouldn't take no for an answer until it became definitive. Once he understood no was no, we've had no problems since. Remember, these are animals that ram into each other and butt each other constantly. Sometimes you have to correct them sternly, or else neuter them and put them in freezer camp.

BTW, I really don't know how I could flip Oreo over since my accident, and I know a lot of people who would have trouble flipping over a nearly 200 lb buck. Nevertheless, we got the point across to him that I was off limits. So now, he behaves himself around me.:thumbsup

How do you flip a 200# goat?
Pull his legs out from under him, the far ones from you.

Just slap him or stomp your foot, being gentle and pussyfooting around will get you rammed, hard. You have to equal their level of intensity.
