Early last summer we bought an ND trio (two does and a buck) from someone who had basically rescued them from another family that couldn't keep them any more. From what she though she knew the does were 2 to 3 years old and the buck was around 3. The three had been kept together before she got them. We really thought one of the does was pregnant and, even after we got them she seemed to be getting bigger. The vet even though she was pregnant. Because they were so aggressive we gave the does to our friend who has a larger heard and kept the buck thinking we'd use him to breed this spring. In anticipation of that we purchased a Nubian doe so we could start minis.
Well, the doe we thought was pregnant apparently wasn't because she's still just fat and it's been seven months since we originally purchased them and five months now since they left our place. I want to find out if our buck is going to be able to do the job before our Nubian and our other little doe are ready to breed next fall. Is it expensive to find out? What is the process? (I'm picturing me with a plastic cup and a Playgoat magazine trying to get a sample.)

Sorry, I am so not helpful today. For semen collection, the have special tools for that but to check a goat's swimmers I am not sure. Would your vet be checking it for you?

We take ours to the vet to do it. They use a tool called an electroejaculator with a ram probe. Call around to see if any vets in your area do it. Our vet doesn't but was able to refer me to someone who does.

Interesting.
I think I have an idea what that involves.

You might need to consider if it is worth spending the money for the test.
Seems to me that if he was with two does that long and neither conceived.....
Not sure how much you paid for him, and how much the test would cost.
You might just be throwing good money after bad.

Yeah, OFA, I was hoping someone here might have an idea of how much it cost. Of course I can find that out by making a phone call to the vet. Just not while I'm at work, supposedly working. :hide
