When giving shots is it okay to give more than one at time like doctors do with humans. Like one doe had pink eye so I treating her for that and also needed to give her cdt. I waited, but could I have done both at the same time to save the stress on her? Can you deworm and do cdt also on little ones? Thanks in advance.

Yep, I like getting all the maintenace work done on the animal at the once. So my goats may get their feet trimmed, dewormed, shots given and whatever else they need while they are on the milk stand.

I never vaccinate anything that is on sick or on antibiotics w/ a modified LIVE virus-type vaccine.

The antibiotics may well KILL the bug before the animal has a chance to build immunity.

If they're on antibiotics at the time their CDT is due, I wait 2 weeks after the last dose was given.

Deworming and vaccinations is fine, but IMHO, wait on the vaccines until after the antibiotic course is finished.

You are right about the antibiotics. I skimmed the thread and missed the pinkeye treatment.

Question...how would antibiotics kill viruses? :p

( :hide )

Actually, I'm with you on this...but not exactly for the same reason. My thinking is that is the animal's on antibiotics, it's sick, and I don't vaccinate sick animals.

The animal's immune system has to go 'attack' the vaccine (be it viral or bacterial, modified-live or killed) to stimulate the desired immunity.. Redirecting and further taxing the immune system while the animal's actually using it to fight off a naturally-acquired pathogen just isn't a good idea.

We adopted that policy with the goats after having taken a dog to the vet for a stomach issue that went on and on and on...my wife noted to the vet that she was due for shots anyway, and asked if she could go ahead and get thsoe while she was there.

NOPE.

Their policy is that they don't vaccinate animals who come in for illness exams..

Some might argue that's all about getting the animal in as many times as possible to maximize their profits, and that's something I grumbled to my wife as soon as she told me the dog didn't get her shots and would have to go back..

She said "Um, no..." ( :smack ) "...they wouldn't do it because she had a fever."

Oh. :hide

So...from that point forward, we no longer vaccinate just because someone was close to being due and had to get other shots or needed some other kind of illness-related work done anyway.. Only healthy animals get vaccines now. :)

CM, sometimes it's just easier to go w/ the short, logical explanation....;)

I've come to that conclusion more times than I can count, but I always seem to abandon it in favor of technicality at some point later on. :gig

Sometimes I think I'm a masochist. :p

It's OK, CM just likes to think out loud, although in this case on the forum, it is thinking in writing. ;)

Yeah, I wouldn't vaccinate sick animals, but in otherwise healthy animals it's ok to give vaccines together. Either give them the same day or spread them out a month apart.

Thank you. I finished up the doses for the pink eye and she looks good there, so I will wait to give her the cdt.

A goat owner that I just met yesterday told me that when you deworm you should have two different kinds. Deworm with one brand one month then the next month us the other one. What is your thoughts on that one. I have never heard that before and we are still trying to find a vet in our area. If they work on big animals it is only horses not goats. Even though we have had goats for about 18 months now I still consider us newbies. :)
