Since I have done two back to back weeks of oral worming of my isolated doe with liquid ivomec I noticed tonight her eyelids now seem paler than they were when I began the regiment.. what is the best iron supplement out there.. I thought I had some red cell but can't find it.. plus how long does red cell keep??? what about some iron paste or an oral drench of iron supplement from Tractor Supply.. I know I also have nutridrench and power punch but those don't seem to have much if any mineral content. suggestions.. she is still hanging on.. not a huge appetite except for fresh pine needles.. she was nibbling hay. she did gobble down a handful of b.o.s.s and then i picked a couple small limbs off my white pine outside the barn and she literally bout ate my hand off trying to gobble those needles.. wondering if there is some content to them she is craving? vitamins?? she has fresh container of loose minerals out in her isolation pen.. but now with the paling of the eyelids since worming began they still have some pink but definately light pink and lighter shade than 2 weeks ago at time of first dose of oral ivomec. I also picked up the safeguard oral suspension wormer tonight at TSC.. I am assuming that is the kind to do for this alleged meningeal worm???

Is the Safeguard liquid or paste? I'm not sure about dosage for the paste but liquid would be 1cc per 7 lbs. I have red cell so I'm not sure what other good supplements would do for iron. I'm guessing some people iron would work but have no idea on dosage. You may even want to get some type of injectible from the vet. Have you done any B complex? Probably a fortified B Complex would be in order. I hope she will be ok for you.

I am really new to goats, so please take what I say with a grain (or three) of salt.

My wether Plato got really pale not too long ago ( I let it get out of hand, I was distracted with a sick relative). I treated him with cydectin and then followed with safeguard. I treated with probios and redcell.

He did get more pale right after I treated him, but after the second worming and being treated with red cell several times, he began to gain color back.

I just wormed again about two weeks ago. He is still a little paler than the rest and is getting weekly redcell treatments.

It took about two weeks after the first worming to really see a difference. The biggest difference came after I gave him a copper bolus, his weight gain, coat and general health improved quickly and dramaticly.

Hopefully, this will not be a lifelong problem for Plato.

My point is, listen to the advice given, communicate with your vet and be patient, it may take some time to get that color back.

I like to use calf manna, too.
Our vet suggested it when I had a doe w/ bottle jaw a few yrs ago....I gave her red cell daily for a week, then 2x a week, and 1/4 c calf manna 2x a day.
You might also give her a B shot, really helps the appetite.

what is the dose on the red cell again.. and how long does it keep.. I am thinking the bottle I have is old! live over 2 years.. would that still be good? I hate to get the gallon jug now at TSC cause it is like 25 bucks.. they have another gallon jug of something similar (name escapes me) same ingrediants but a little less iron in it.. and it is only 19 bucks.. worse case scenario if my red cell is too old could i go with either product at TSC or is there a place to get smaller bottles of red cell?

You can check the bottle and see if it has an expiration date on it.

By the way, Red Cell has 150 mg iron per tablespoon. (14 cc) >1% by volume

Cane syrup (Steens) has 1260 milligrams per tablespoon. (14 cc) 6% by volume

Molasses has 2% iron by volume, 2% Calcium by volume and 2% Magnesium by volume

Seems to me, Cane syrup is a quick source of iron which you can get at the grocery store if iron is what you want to give to your goat. IT also has 840 mg of calcium per tablespoon (4% by volume)

Yeah, it should have one listed.

If you have a Rural King in your area they sometimes have the quart containers of Red Cell.

I use Red Cell at 6ml / 20-30# every 8-12 hrs on Day 1 and then weekly until the goat is better.

I would probably add a second class of dewormer here too just in case your herd has ivermectin resistant worms in it.
