It's believed that all rabbits have probably been exposed/harbor it and in times of stress show/develop symptoms, so culling may not always be the answer.
One that has frequent or constant bouts with it, or is severely ill or with non clear discharge, could be culled...but the other stock that have symptoms could be kept to produce litters, and their surviving kits would be resistant...and so on...ending up with an entire herd of resistant stock.
Rabbit respiratory systems are sensitive, so dust, dander, things like that can create issues, which in turn stresses the rabbit, and stressed rabbits are more susceptible to developing snuffles (pasteurella)...or having existing cases of it severely aggravated. Eliminating known sources of irritants is a good idea.
Oh, im sorry! I didnt want people to think i was being a brat toward the breeder. Or that I was just going to start culling my herd! After I read my original post again, i thought it could seem mean.
I agree with what you said, about moving the rabbits from the source, in this case it MAY be the chickens. We are moving our rabbits to their new home in a few days. I am excited about that.
Raising-rabbits.com has a story on an experience they had when they bought a rabbit with snuffles. They did what you said and just bred it out. That is what I am going to have to do. I appreciate your advice and I am sorry about editing the post....
There have definetly been times I wish I could have edited something I have said! haha...
We live where it can get into the 100's for a few weeks in the summer and I was looking for ideas to keep the buns cool. I found a website that gives plans for a "barn" made of pvc pipe that is covered with a double layer of the thickest shadecloth you can find. Then you install misters on the top of it (with no leakage on the buns ) and it is suspose to keep it at 85 degrees. We will see.....
I love misters. They really can do a good job of cooling things down as long as the wind is calm. Saw a hoop barn sketch somewhere with misters inside, so winds blowing the mist away wasn't an issue, but that would take more room than I have right now to keep the rabbits from getting misted.
It's common for summer temps here in AZ to sizzle at 110-115++ for a good spell of the summer, so I hear ya on the warm weather. I do have a commercial misting system that will drop temps 20-30 degrees over an expansive commercial area and it's really great for a huge area, but the little rabbit barn is cooled with a 4500cfm evap/swamp cooler.
The set up you mentioned is likely to work very well. Years ago I had misters on my aviaries and they worked great!
Yes. But, not all sneezing is caused by snuffles. My buns sneeze when they drink sometimes from the water, they can also sneeze from dust, or when its hot out sometimes there noses will run. If they have snuffles then their paws with be yellow from the discharge, and the discharge from their nose will be yellow. If its clear then its not snuffles.
