I have six ewes that had been housed together with no ram on the property. I put a ram in with the bunch on December 15 and I had my first ewe kid out 2.5 days ago (day 151) with healthy triplets. I had removed the ram 5 days later and housed him with my two younger ewes and left the 4 older ones without a ram as I purchase a higher quality ram and put the second ram in with them on Dec 23rd to catch there second heat cycle if they weren't bred yet.

Question - how likely is it that they didn't catch on the first heat (the one induced by the presence of a ram)? Obviously he bred one but is the first heat not very reliable in achieveing conception? I am trying to figure out if I have more lambing imminently or if I can sleep through the night for another couple weeks. :p

Thanks!

Some of our ewes have not taken on the first breeding...mainly the first timers...so, can't say for sure. I've seen breedings and marked them on my calendar for lambing time, then seen that ewe bred again and remark my calendar.

Hope you get some beautiful lambies!

Probably your best bet on figuring that out would be to go on how tight their udders are! If they are so tight and big that the tits look like they have milk in them too and are sticking straight out to the sides, I would say ya better keep a close eye on them! If they still wrinkle a bit in the middle when the ewe walks, ya probably got a week or so!
Lol, no matter how hard you try, it is always just a guess! :/

The udders are definitely filling up but my one yearling has a really tight udder for a week now and she seems swollen too. Who knows...I keep getting butterflies in my stomach everytime I come around the corner to check on them, thinking I might see something but still nothing new. And don't even get me started on the goat that has been really bagged up and SUPER puffy vulva and liags coming a going for a MONTH now...even has my neighbour stumped!
