Ok, so my first goats came home about 2 weeks ago and I've noticed a strange behavior from one of them. Whenever I take snacks to them Shug scarfs indiscriminately. Annabelle, on the other hand, won't eat until she's used the treat (and the hand delivering the treat) to scratch her head :/.

Today it was a few cabbage leaves and it went something like this: 1. sniff cabbage 2. use cabbage to scratch poll until cabbage is thoroughly goatie 3. eat cabbage.

At the time I'm thinking "Riiiiggghhht... so maybe she doesn't like cabbage? No, she's eating it. Ok, maybe she wants to knock it out of my hand and eat it off the ground? Nope, she refuses to eat off ground. Out of the bowl? Nope. Hmmm... maybe cabbage is not appetizing unless it smells like a goat??"

What's the deal? :gig Did you have this experience with Annabelle too, Kate?

No, but she wasn't herd boss here, either...I think she wants Shug to know that - even if it DOES hit the ground...that was HER cabbage!! :gig Silly little Annabelle! She has always been so quirky!

That is funny!

We have some kind of bush that grows around here (not sure what it is) that the goats absolutely MUST scratch their heads on, roll in, and rub all over themselves before they will settle down to eat it. Maybe it's a smell they like?

Silly little goat! I'd say that she likes the smell of the cabbage rather than the cabbage smelling like goat.
