I am so grateful for this community and have been able to figure out a lot of good information about my back yard animals from so many people here. I believe it’s time to formally introduce myself. I live in Middle Tennessee and I started my back yard herd with chickens about 4-5 years ago. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but am so glad that I did. I have a nice long introduction about that on the welcome page of BackYardChickens I decided to add a goat to my back yard entourage about a year and a half ago and started doing my research....something I learned AFTER I got my chickens....I don’t have a whole lot of land so I knew I only wanted one goat to make sure it had enough room to be healthy....I read a lot of articles about how a single goat can get lonely and that sometimes they could be happy....so I went back and forth about whether I should get a goat and ultimately decided I wanted one and would do my best to keep him/her happy.
My mother’s boyfriend heard I was looking for a small goat and he “knew a guy” so before I knew it Momma was sending me pics of a couple of Pygmy goats that were for sale....they were both around 4-5 months old, one male and one female, so small, so cute!! I decided to get the boy and went to go pick him up but when I got there I decided I wanted the girl instead....the boy had blue eyes and was tri-colored, would let me pet him, and was very photogenic.....but the girl.....she was almost solid white, with a patch of gray on her neck and knees, was super small, and had a white horn and a black horn! From certain angles she looked like a unicorn!!! So I called up my husband after sending him the pics and told him there was no way I could decide, it was impossible to pick just one of them and that I really needed both of them....to my surprise, he agreed They were smaller than we thought they would be and from seeing their herd mates knew they weren’t going to get much bigger so the space wouldn’t really be an issue...We brought them home and have never regretted it They do make a mess but still not as much of a mess as the 2 ducks we had for a year or so....Pepper and Pearl....they are a happy couple and have already had their first baby....Pearl had no issues with the delivery and her baby has already went on to live with her new family. Her name is Daisy and I get updates on her often....she was 5 weeks old when she was weaned, it was a little early but she was definitely ready and not drinking much milk and eating plenty of hay and some grains....Pepper and Pearl spend most of the day hanging out on top of their little log cabins and do a great job keeping the hedges trimmed all evenly to goat-height. They are very entertaining, so sweet, funny, and am so glad we got them.
